ChrisM:
I have also heard that, as of 2008, there will be dive trips, and there will be land trips,. but no crossover. Dive boats won't have land tours, which is a real shame.

Where did you hear that? We're booked for September 2008 on the Aggressor II. I made reservations over a year ago, and I will be extremely disappointed if there are no land tours offered.

From my charter operator that met with the governer of the Galapagos last week. This has been rumored to be coming for some time

This is also what my husband hinted at. As both a DM and Naturalist Guide in the Galapagos, he's been told he has to choose to do one or the other for his employment. I thought I must have misunderstood him, but what ChrisM says confirms it.

Sucks, doesn't it? I can't imagine going all the way to Gpgs to dive and NOT being allowed to see all of that cool stuff on land, as well. So is everyone now supposed to book separate, back-to-back tours if they want to see both? aieee.

EnronX - I shall endeavour to remember to pass on your wishes to the guides - if we have the same ones as you, that is.

Chris M - I am very glad that your mate had a first hand account of the achooling hammerheads - I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I would be on both an ecological and personal level if we did not get to see them.

Thsi has been my understanding for months. Our operator has only been offering a back to back package instead of the 10 day mixed tour for many months in clear anticipation of this ruling. It is very well kown apparently.

The other point to the previous poster is that I didn't think from previous discussions on here and the revelations over this issue that Aggressor DID do mixed packages anyway (dual activity) which was one of the reasons it was still allowed to perate through this whole hoo-ha?

John Gulliver:
As Lou said, our agent is adamant that we will definitely be going to Wolf and Darwin on the Deep Blue at the beginning of October.

John, when will you be at the Galapagos? We will be aboard the Lammerlaw from October 6th till 13th. We are scheduled for Darwin and Wolf but I haven't got the official statement from our operator. If you are on Deep Blue at the same time, don't forget to wave at the Lammerlaw...

No, Lou - Aggressor has always offered land visits as well as diving. (Though admittedly, since the focus is on diving, there are faw fewer land visits than offered on the strictly land tours.)

Nobody goes on land at Wolf & Darwin, though... there are no trails or boat landings; it's available only to researchers who get there, I think, by helicopter.

So everything stays the same till end of the year... land-based diving, live-aboard (stays restricted to the 8 days?)... and probably in 2008 only the Aggressors and Sky Dancer (if not some other)... right?

Keep in mind this is only my understanding of the situation from what I have read and been told from tour operators, booking agents and dive shop owners. These are my best guesses.

Yes.

My understanding is the yachts can operate as scheduled to satisfy bookings until December 31st.

Not so sure on that one. I don't think anyone really knows what will happen until the new regulations that go into effect after December 31st are drafted. The fishermen are supposed to be given priority for the new diving permits. This raises a lot of questions as to if and how non fishermen yacht owners can obtain permits to conduct dive tours after December 31st.

This is what Ken from Galapagos Adventures had posted on his site linked earlier in the thread...

'.... Right now, all the yachts that were offering dive trips except for the Sky Dancer and Aggressors also have run naturalist trips. The fishermen refer to this as 'double activity' and for whatever reason, it is one of their major objections to the dive trips.'

So, that is where my understanding came from. Maybe it is the emphasis to be made on land only or diving only in the future, and not an ad hoc combination of one trip all diving, one trip mixed and one trip all land across the year?

Whatever, the way our tour operator is getting over is, as I said, is to offer the 7 day dive liveaboard, follwed by a 4 0r 5 day land-based naturalist schedule.
