I only hand carry my D70, lenses, laptop and other bits and pieces. My strobes, housing, ports etc go in a Storm Case (similar to Pelican) and I never had a problem with it. The housing is pretty tough, just make sure that the lenses on the ports are covered. Theftwise, insurance is the best thing to have, if someone is going to steal something from you then the type of cases/baggage probably won't help much anyhow.
