I recall @buddhasummer discussed this issue in posts #17 and #19 here
Scuba Clinic Tools Review

I would be interested if there's further feedback.

I haven't (yet) had a problem with my spline tool from Scuba Clinic Tools. It even fits my 156 adjustment knobs. Maybe they fixed this issue after budhhasummer's feedback.

I apologize to SCT for not updating that thread so will do so here.

A month or so ago I ordered some tools, when the package arrived it included another spline tool FOC that they wanted me to try, did I mention they were great people...

Well, it fitted all my G250s. It seems that they made it to the same spec (?) as the SP and ST one, it is sloppier on the new jam nuts but also fits the old ones I was having issues with, 16 in total.

Below is a photo of the two different jam nuts. I'm not sure if SP Japan used a different spec one.

I did of course advise SCT that the new tool they sent fits both versions but just checked their website and they still specify the part number that their tool fits so am unsure if they only made one for me or have redesigned the tool to fit both versions but have not updated their website. I'll contact them and check.

The new jam nut is on the right, you can see a small collar on it (11-250-106)

I'm actually surprised that anyone actually defends Scubapr's vanity spline nut …

I've had a few laughs in this thread :laughrant:

.

Not defending it at all, just saying that it isn't as much of an issue as some here make it out to be, heck, if it were, SP wouldn't be one of the, if not the, major regulator mfg. in the world and almost the standard for technical diving. But it is your right for you to believe that it isn't suitable for you, whatever makes you happy to go diving :)

Good night all, it is WAY past my bed time here in happy sunny Libya :)

It is interesting to me that the Halcyon branded G250V did away with that splined jam nut and use a "normal" nut instead, I can only assume they thought it was silly too. Unfortunately, they do not fit the G250 but if I had any G250Vs I'd swap the splined nut for a Halcyon one. YMMV.

I was inspired by re-reading your posts to test my Scuba Clinic Tools splined wrench on a couple of 156 knobs, a G250 jam nut, a bunch of Scubapro hoses and regulators (S600, R390, R290, R190) and some TUSA second stages which use the same spline nut.

The Scuba Clinic Tools splined wrench handled it all ! An Excellent tool.

It stays in my workshop though …

So perhaps the Japanese G250s did indeed use a different jam nut. When I was trying to sort it out SCT advised that they had sold many of their splined tools but that I was the only person who had ever reported an issue. Strange...a mystery for the ages.

Not bashing SP as I own many of their regs but while we're on the topic I also find it strange that their technical marketed G260 has a pin which must be removed in order to take off the face plate, I thought the ability to remove a face plate underwater was important to tech divers (?)

I'm not a tech diver and don't play one on TV so I could well be mistaken.

Or, maybe, SP didn't want to give everything in the regulator and wanted to keep some of the good features to themselves??

Hmm Tusa using the same jam nut, the mystery continues...are yours with the collar as per my right photo?

Simon,
You probably already know, living in Japan, but for everyone else, Tabata/TUSA manufactures several Scubapro regs under license for branding under their own label. Hence, the silly splined nut.
Not all SP regs, but some. That makes TUSA a great deal for folks that know that in many cases they're really getting a SP reg, often at a lower price.
