This past weekend, on an impulse I purchased my first BP. I am really excited about the entire thing. Any advice about going from a back inflator BC to a BP/W?

But I will not need weights correct Walter?

CB -- depends on the weight of your BP and if you are using steel tanks. The weight of your BP is how much you can loose from your belt. Also if you're switching to steel, that will loose some of the weight also.

Everyone's buoyancy is different. You'll likely need to change how much weight you need any time you change what equipment you use. You may or may not need weight. You will probably not use the same amount.

I am down to 20 pounds right now and was thinking of dropping to 15. Once it warms up I am going to have to play.

We don't have enough info to make a good guess regarding the weight. Assuming you have a SS plate from Halcyon or DR, you'll be able to lose about 6 pounds. If its a heavy plate from Koplin or FredT then you can lose the weight of the plate (I think they're 9 or 10?). If its an aluminum plate you probably can't lose any weight.

I assume you're diving single tanks? Are you using a STA? If so, you can lose the weight of it also.

Since you're using 20 lbs I also assume you're diving aluminum 80s. Like June said, a switch to steel tanks would help greatly but of course that's a large expense.

I went from around 28 lbs on my belt in a full 7mm wetsuit to 6lbs, by:

a) going to a SS backplate (6lbs)
b) heavy STA (6 lbs)
c) Steel tank (5 lbs)
d) loss of natural BC buoyancy (???)
e) naturally better buoyancy and trim. (???)

But, the important point here - I still need a weightbelt. When I dive dry with 200 wt underwear, I add another 2 lbs.

Walter:
There's not a dime's worth of difference between them. If you can dive one, you can dive the other.

I would agree that if you can dive one that you can dive the other but there certainly is a difference. While I can and have dived both, I have no desire to ever dive any bc again.
