The Peso is sinking fast today, even the CDN$ is at 16:1.

Going form 10-20 is a big jump but I remember when the peso was 3-1 in 1995, then overnight went to 10-1. Huge shock for those citizens who had debt in dollars but payroll in pesos. It was many years before we saw any Mexican tourists in Cozumel. I was able to buy a new F250 extra cab built in Kansas City for $10,000 before the dealers caught on.

Had dinner at Los Otates last night, and I like that they post the exchange rate on the wall. (19:1) same as our bank exchange rate. Seemed fair to me.

5 of us for dinner, few beers, sodas, many tacos, burrito.... $30usd including a good tip.

The Mega/Chedraui had 20.17 2 weeks back. Wonder what it is today.

New Especias gave 20:1 too.

On the flip side I think Mexico is going to loose control on inflation, I am not a savey investor, but that is my gut feeling.

No worries, I'm not a savvy currency player either as demonstrated by my last 3 private currency plays when I load a hoard of pesos at the end of each trip to get us through the first several days on the next trip. The idea has always been the exchange rate CAN'T get any better and, yet, it does! This trip was no different at 20:1 and here we are a few weeks later at 21:1! Looking back at this December's 15-day trip we spent about 16,000 Pesos on food, drink, taxis, snacks and tips (7,000 went to the dive crew for tips) and we dined out every night with drinks. If only the airlines, accommodations, and dive ops priced in Pesos (but I do understand why they can't).

Pay in Pesos and you'd effectively get 21:1 today. ALWAYS pay in Pesos wherever you can. That being said, we enjoyed Los Otates for 3 dinners on our December trip and with a couple of Sol beers per if you spend more than about what you spent ($6 or 125 Pesos/PP) you'll feel downright sick you ate so much! Los Otates is an absolute must as is Casa Cuzamil for their Comida Del Dia (although they said they were in the process of reworking their menu over X-mas so maybe they've bumped up the prices a bit). I think Comida Del Dia there was 80 pesos when we went. That get's you chips, salsa, soup, and your choice of about 6 entree options (I always go with the chili relleno with cheese only - Talk about a heart attack wrapped in a chili!).

The airlines are going to screw you no matter what, it's what we do. As the value of the Dollar has risen from around 14 MXN a couple years back to about 21 MXN now, the basic commodity prices have been stable but strained. Now Mexico fuel prices are popping up to dollar levels and at very bad time politically and I think that inflation is going to spike and may not be controllable. We may be in a sweet spot with US dollars in the near term but the average resident is probably going to be squeezed hard. I remember the fuel spikes in the 70's and the carnage that lasted into the 80's in the US.

It's the "free" market system, for better or worse. Vendors are always going to charge what they think the market will bear.
