It depends on how you are transporting them, but yes DOT can and does inspect private vehicles. All of the bridge tunnels in Virginia make any vehicle with gas bottles stop at an inspection station prior to proceeding( including RVs). I actually got inspected at a DUI checkpoint by a very knowledgeable highway cop....he noticed the 8 tanks in the bed of my truck and wanted to verify the hydro dates and DOT stamps. Funny thing though he didn't say a word about the pistol in the passenger seat.
 
Thanks for the input. It is just frustrating to pay 2x the price in Europe for tanks I can't bring home. Shipping home is free with household goods, but my issue right now is getting the tanks to Europe. I'm going to check at the post office to see if I can mail them over that way since I do have a valid APO address. FedEx wants ~600$ which is just crazy.

Worst comes to worst, I'll just end up buying a used set and sell them before I leave, but I'd hate to go through the hassle if I don't have to.
