Did you...

1. Drop the dust cap and get the dustcap dirty/wet
2. Drop the dust cap and get the regulator dirty/wet

You should have the dust over secured prior to washing a reg, unless the reg is attached to a tank. If you got water in the reg, immediately blow air through the reg (hook it up to a tank and purge) then take it in for an overhaul.
