The first dive of the year following my certification I let the air out of my BCD to start my descent and when I went under I realized that I still had the snorkel in my mouth rather than the regulator. GLUGG GLUGG :11:

Does a backroll into 6 foot swells and a ripping current on a nj night dive with no fins count? The look on the divemasters face as my feet went past him almost made it worth it.(almost) I took them off to crawl across the boat to get a spare reel when the mate came up from hooking the wreck and said how bad the current was. Clipped the reel on but no fins.

Dropped down with my tank closed. You do actually get a couple of breaths, before it's the end of the world..........

I thought one of the bungees broke that secured my tank in the NC dive boat I was on. My tank took a header on the deck and bent the first stage yoke, by the time I got to it I was down to about 1800 psi. We were trying to get around a squall so the seas were pretty rough at that point.

The second stupid thing was trying to attach what was a bent reg to another tank, after 5 minutes that "o-ring" blew. If was obvious then I hosed the yoke.

The third stupid thing was, after reviewing some pics I took of the back of the boat, that either the bungee completely broke off, or I NEVER PUT IT BACK ON after attaching my reg.

The fourth stupid thing was getting talked into going back out in the squall and diving some more, should have bagged it :)

This has been some good reading.
I have been almost in the water when I remembered my valve was closed. The dumbest thing so far was putting my back-up light in my BC pocket thinking the velcro would hold it in. Surprise when we got back to the dock I was one $30 flashlight down :(

chau,
Jeff

Second dive after certification. Diving with my future father-in-law off his boat, which has a small folding swim ladder, unlike the heavy-duty rig on my instructor's roomy ten diver boat. I'm a big dude, so getting up this tiny, flimsy ladder wasn't too easy. Of course, rather than putting my fins over my wrists like I was taught, I handed them up. So when I flopped back into the heavy current and 4-5 foot waves, I didn't have a chance in hell of being able to swim back to the boat quick enough. By the time the anchor was pulled and the boat brought around, I was maybe 150-200 yards away. Glad it didn't happen in worse conditions. KEEP YOUR GEAR ON!

Well now we have covered almost everything other than the dumbest thing you have done that you should have known better than doing....

I think that for most living people, the answer to this question is more likely to revolve around marriage than diving.

Dumbest thing I ever did (while diving): Last Christmas some friends and I dove the Breakwater in Monterey. My dive buddy had rented a wetsuit that was ridin' a little snug... After 30 min in the water, he was singing soprano and needed a quick exit. We decided to climb up on the rocks of the breakwater and scale the wall... (bad idea #1)

We both took a beating on the rocks from the surge. I broke a dive light. He didn't fare too badly.

We managed to scale the wall, but realized that we were on the wrong side of the locked marina gate. Our plan was just to walk down to the boat slips, jump in the water, and swim back up to the boat ramp. Of course there was a Coast Guard boat docked in the marina (bad idea #2). Fortunately we ran into some sailors who unlocked the gate for us on their way out.

I imagine that scuba diving next to a Coast Guard boat during a terrorist alert is a good way to get shot!

In a rush to get a wetsuit from the rental shop, picked a females suit. Thought it was feeling a little weird but dove it anyway. On the way back I thought I'll buy it for $70.00. Dove that thing for a year until I looked it at oneday and the saw the (.)(.).........

The Breakwater ...Oh, yeah, thanks for reminding me! :11:
I'm doing a solo night dive at the breakwater last year in September. I'm heading back, and I know better than to get too close to the rocks once you get past the gate 'cause of the fishermen.
I get too close. And of course, I get a nice big hook in the leg of my neoprene dry suit. I can feel the tip of the hook poking slightly into my leg through the suit, and I know that if I put any more pull on the line, it's going right into my flesh. My wife has been walking along the breakwater, following my light. And later she tells me that the fisherman is quite distraught at catching a diver, apologizing to my wife while franticly feeding me line.
In the water, I pull my knife and cut the line, leaving the hook still in my suit, but not in my leg. But during the event, I dropped my light (Ike-light, super C), and for some reason (Murphy?) this is the one time I failed to put the strap around my wrist. Down goes my light into an opening between the rocks. I follow it down, and it is just out of my reach. I push myself between the rocks. It's tight, but my fingertips are only inches away. I push some more - I'm stuck! Can't move in OR OUT!!I stuck between the rocks in 20' of water!!
I exhale, exhale, exhale, willing myself to become narrower... Finally, I wiggle out.
Man, I am relieved! Forget the light!
So, if anyone in Monterey found a yellow Ike-light Super C at the Breakwater in late September, it was mine. Keep the darn thing!
