driving in NZ?

I'm going going down to Dunedin on exchange soon and plan to do a lot of diving. That being the case, I'd like to get a cheap car while I'm there instead of having to rely on buses and such, but I don't know what body to contact in NZ to see if my Canadian licence will transfer down there. What's the organization that regulates driving for NZ (Otago in particular)?
