read about the ice machine in that "do you eat the salsa" thread.

Doesn't sound like they are all clean or purified. (to be fair, that could happen anywhere, even the US, though if they establishment lets it go to crap).

how do I know the water did it? No way I can really be for sure.

I had the Chimachanga and a coke with ice in it. The ice was the only water product I had.

I wasn't deadly bad sick, but I guarentee you that it tore up my digestive system. Whatever it was....

Well, whether the ice machine is properly maintained and cleaned is a different issue althogether, and yes, that could happen anywhere. Houstonians will relate when I say "SLIME in the ice machine"...good ole Marvin Zindler...haha!

What I was saying, is that the ice is not made from tap water...period....it's just not. It's a lifestyle and really isn't an option here. Hotels with purification systems may have their own ice making machines that are hooked to the purification system, but every other establishment that serves the public has their ice delivered....we have more ice and bottled water distributors on the island than dive shops.

All the bottled water there has been free for me, I always do the all inclusive. Good to know they purify the tap, though. Didn't realize that.
Yup .. it seems most do the all-inclusive, but with our deal, breakfast & a car is included, so it's not real cost effective to do the AI. We have too many favorite spots in town for lunch & dinner, and with diving we really don't do much drinking either ...

Christie:
Did you hear that Marvin died (cancer) several months ago? Channel 13 has a new reporter doing a much smaller version of his reports and they still speak of him often.

OH NOOOO...say it isn't so! How sad...he was a real Houston news icon and a real character! He didn't look good last time I saw him on the news. Come to think of it, I do think my Mom told me he had lost the battle. Rest in Peace Marvin!

What are the general rules on drinking water and eating ice in Cozumel?

As far as the water, I'd not drink it unless you heard the crack of a purified water bottle cap take place...We call it(aguapura) cheap insurance on Roatan & that's the way I also look @ a place like CZM........

I've personnaly seen my wife SICK AS A DOG for about 3 weeks following an eye mission trip we made to Belize in the mid 80's..As she said, what a hell of a diet......Both of us learned very early in our Central American trips it's much better to be safe than sorry......

Coz is not Central America ... you have to remember it's a small island that depends greatly on tourist. They don't want everyone getting sick - it's bad for business. I've had the water and ice - in a plain old glass - in any number of restaurants - even the tiny family places, and never had any trouble. My one bout of food poisoning? From the Embassy Suites in San Antonio ... go figure!

Yes exactly Kat...and (as you know) that glass of water came from a 5 gallon jug of purified water that every restaurant and home on the island has, NOT the tap.

well... I'll have to take you word on it since you live there..... :D

BTW... not positive of the name of this place, but I think it was Pancho's Backyard (behind a store called Cinco Solas or Cinco del Sol or something like that). Good food, good service, but we "paid" for it later.

Pancho's definitely doesn't serve tap water...so it had to have been something else...but I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your meal there. It's a Cozumel landmark with an excellent reputation.

Yup, that's Pancho's Backyard - behind Los Cinco Soles. (My favorite store.) Actually every time we've gone to Pancho's they try to sell us bottled water, and we disappoint them and say "no, just a glass of water." We've never gotten sick. So I doubt it was the water, maybe something in the food didn't agree with you ....
