(It seems that Cat has brought me out of my shell after over a year lurking.) Just some questions.

Why would anyone ever consider Yoga funny?
Why are SeaJays posts always so long, even when he agrees?
Why are some people so easily offended by the accronymn DIL?
Why are new DIR-F participants always so zealous?
Other than the slight slandering of an acronym why has Leadweights opinion met with so much angst?
And lastly, Where do you buy a crystal ball and does it work with the stock market?

In order:

Ever look at someone doing Yoga? They look funny!

Because he writes very well. Most of us just put it out there and that's it. He's got great skills.

Because it's a blatant rip-off.

If you took the class, you'd know why also. We get Kool-aid!

Because they are not thought out particularly well.

Walmart, and it works very well with the stock market. Just doesn't make you any money though....

<snip>

The name Doing it Left was inspired by the term copyleft.

<snip>
The ironic part about this comment is that in my experience folks that are GNU (originators of the term "copyleft") and/or Open Source types would lean more torwards a DIR style of diving. From what I have heard about Richard Stallman, his demeanor is similar to how others have described George Irvine's.

Does Linus Torvalds dive?

"...Does Linus Torvalds dive?..."

Squashing that pudgy Euro into a 7mm would be a sight. The only thing funnier would be seeing him trying to relax with the DIL underwater yoga drills with his Hub, Air2, brick-on-a-stick gauge console and whatever other drek is DIL...

C'mon Linus, Lotus for me in your split fins, and bubble out, "happy thoughts, happy thoughts..."

Open Source is about the only thing more inclusive than this wack DIL.

Very nice. Made me laugh.

Sometimes they snore too!

Yes. He does.

I see, I missed the koolaid! That explains it!

Um.. I thought they were, at least from his view. They may not look good from where you sit, and his ideas may not even be the best, but they were well thought out.[/B][/QUOTE]

I'm not sure where to closest Walmart is. Would a block of ice work if I rounded it off and said magic words?

Goodnight DD. I'll look for you tomorrow.:D

And YOU repeat after ME...There's more than one way to do it, the inflator button still works....There's more than one way to do it, the inflator button still works....

What happens if the inflator button sticks? (Before you scoff, I've seen it twice, once in a pool during training and once during a dive, neither were my rig). A bit of sand in the wrong spot your BC is inflating non stop till you disconnect. Are you now without an Octo?

The central theme of DIL is that solutions to diving problems are mainly based on improving the diver rather than the diver’s equipment.

Improving the skills of divers by constant practice is the #1 priority but, you need the right tool (equiptment) for the job.

A race car driver has developed the ability and skill to win races. If you take away his $500,000 car and replace it with say a VW Bug, all of his skill and ability are useless...he will lose every time. Equiptment does matter.

For the DIL diver, the ultimate skill is total relaxation in the water. This is the key to perfect buoyancy, trim and low air consumption. A new BC is not necessary to achieve these goals.

Stremalined, robust, durable and standerdized equiptment can only help aid a divers feeling of relaxation. I still beleive in the BP.

Lower air consumption is mostly the result of relaxation. A relaxed diver will even fin more efficiently. How do you get there? It helps to dive a lot.

DIR talks about this. Adding a carefully thought out rig can only help here.

DIL supports efforts to allow solo diving. No diver should be forced to dive with a bad buddy. Furthermore, at depths of less than 60 feet DIL believes that a redundant air supply is not necessary to dive solo.

That's a whole topic unto itself. Agencies will most likely not promote solo diving for liability reasons. I don't recommend solo diving anyway.

Although DIL does not advocate a standard gear configuration we do have a few objectives in this area. DIL believes that all recreational diving should be done with the assistance of a dive computer.

Computers are ok in my opinion but overdependence is not. You would have to be careful to make sure that divers still understood the basics of dive planning.

The use of alternative second stages that are attached to the BC inflator is strongly discouraged.

I completely agree with you here. Those things are so stupid.

DIL believes that both back inflation and jacket BC’s are acceptable, but strongly recommends against purchasing bulky extended range back inflate BC’s with 50-pound (or more) capacity wings.

The BP is awfully streamlined and certainly not bulky...:)

DIL is opposed to spearfishing while using scuba. If you like to spearfish do it the ethical way and learn to freedive.

I don't see the point. End result is that you shoot a fish...it's dead...having a reg in your mouth does not make a whole lot of difference. It's more challenging but also more dangerous. Bad idea.

You know, a lot of the stuff you mentioned is standard DIR practice. I still feel that the DIR/BP rig would help accomplish the goals you have outlined better.

Hahahahaaaa!!! I agree! Therefore, I have posted this chapter from War and Peace:

Just kidding.

Seajay and others. I don't think DIR is broken. It is no secret that DIR stresses getting the basic diving skills honed to prefection and some of the posts you and others have made on their DIRF experiences have been an inspiration. It just that DIR is not all that accessable and appears to becoming less so due to the new requirement that all students be DIR equipped.

Oh.

I think I'm just so accustomed to defending DIR that I think I automatically jump... You know the deal. I figured that your DIL was a mockery...

Maybe I'm just a bit sensitive about it. You shoulda seen the abuse I took at the LDS today when I showed up with my Halcyon rig and 7ft hose...
