Do they make a reg that exhales less "violently"

Less bubbly? Not likely. But how those bubbles exit varies among the different regulators. If you look at some the reviews in magazines and web sites, you'll notice that bubble interface (or in-your-face...) is one of the things they rate. In my case, I use an Atomic M1 which tends to send the bubbles to the side and out of my field of view. When you get around to purchasing your own equipment, do your homework and try berfore you buy. This stuff ain't cheap...

I have the opposite problem. With my hood on, my bubble noise is quite amplified.

Sorry, I can still picture my son's 7 year old friend walking to our house to go snowmobiling.........with the open-face helmet on backwards!

try not having the hood over the reg next time....
 
Another option is a reg that includes (or has the option of) an extended exhaust T. I believe many Atomic regs have the option, and the ScubaPro S600 has an extended T available, if you can find one... it was only sold in Europe. I managed to get one for mine, and I LOVE IT. Looks bad *****, too. :)
