Hi,

We will be going to Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen (for cenote diving) on 4/25. We have done a lot of diving in the Caribbean and never had an issue with our first stages connecting to diver operators' tanks. When we mentioned on another dive that we'd be going to Cozumel, someone said they used a different tank attachment (per DIN standard?) than the US (and everywhere else we've been in the Caribbean).

Wondering if this is true or a misunderstanding. If true, maybe we should get our own; if not true and the usual US config will still work, then no worries...

Thanks for any clarification.

Every dive operator in Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, etc., has tanks with a yoke valve that mates with a regulator yoke, just like everywhere else in the Caribbean and most everywhere in the US. Maybe whoever told you that was mistakenly under the opposite impression: that your regulators are DIN and therefore require tanks with a DIN valve.

When I was there last year, every rental tank was yoke. If you've got a DIN regulator you should bring a din to yoke adapter. I installed a yoke kit on my first stages for that trip, and put the din kit back on when I returned.

If you've got a yoke regulator, you're good to go.

Some operators use DIN valves with inserts so they can be routinely used with yoke regulators. If you have a yoke regulator, no problem. If you have a DIN regulator, then either make sure you are using an operator that has DIN (I bet most can do it) or bring a DIN to yoke adapter.

The standard is yoke. As valves are replaced on operator owned tanks many are phasing in the dual style DIN insert convertable valves but I haven't see any on the Meriando rental tanks. Given a heads up most operators will be able to accommodate a limited number of DIN regulators but if you are five minutes out of the marina or on a hotel pier and pull out a DIN reg as a suprise there may not be a DIN tank readily available.

You might be at more ease if you email the dive operator(s) you are thinking about going with.

Everywhere I have dived in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean have had yoke values available to me.

I used a DIN regulator with Tres Pelicanos last year and they had no trouble providing convertible tanks with the removable insert. But I do carry a DIN to Yoke adapter on every trip, just in case.

All 250 of Aldora's tanks have DIN valves with yoke inserts…no problem either way.

Dave as a side bar: have you had any problems with inserts seizing and do you lube the threads?

I little Christolube goes a long ways :)
