I got DAN's master plan because that (or the preferred) is what most people here had according to a poll I posted. However, you also have to become a DAN member to get the insurance, and the membership costs about $29, then add the $70 to it, and you are looking at about $99.

I have DAN preferred....and will always have it as long as I am an active diver,....especially if you are diving in International waters , you don`t always have access to the immediate services that may be required, but with DAN , they handle ALL required services with just a phone call ......

I have DAN, Unfortunatly, I have also had occasion to need DAN and they paid every dime with no muss or fuss. Color me very happy with DAN. They preform as they say they will. Read the policy and that is what you can expect.

Bit of a threadjack here. The title to this thread makes me wonder: Do most rec divers (not just SB members) have diver insurance? Or do most vacation divers assume that their normal medical insurance will help them in case of problems?

I suspect a geographical split here. Certainly in the UK you'll find a lot fewer people are members as (i) NHS treatment is free in the uk and (ii) there are other companies offering cheaper and/or better cover for travelling and abroad.

They seem to be marketted best (or have less competition) in the US and of course healthcare isnt free so insurance is essential even for daily life.

Im not a member but have a policy with another company for all my travelling involving diving.

I can't afford a 'chamber ride', so I have DAN Prefered and also have several of their great certf. courses under my belt...JOIN!

I wouldn't be without DAN. I have, fortunately, not needed to cash it in, but have had fantastic support when I've called them for advice on aquatic injury. They also do some great things for our sport with the fees.

Seems like a very reasonable cost for the insurance - $70 for the preferred plan - IF they actually pay what they promise (unlike several big health insurance comanies I could tell you about).
You've already received a lot of good answers here - if you live in the US?? You could add your location to your profile. Anyway, even a lot of Canadians have DAN in case they are injured out of country.

DAN is an excellent non-profit organization that supplies insurance thru another company, and they have done more diving than any other, imho. Even if you get your insurance elsewhere, you can call them for information and advice, and - I would still suggest the $29 membership with a great magazine...! :thumb:

I don't see this as a hijake. Many US vacation divers do skip this need and hope for the best, and the outcome is often not good at all, especially if out of the US. My medical insurance does not cover me at all out of country, so I count on DAN for diving and Trip insurance for everything else, i.e. medical, luggage losses beyond the $9.07 per pound airline limit for international, etc.

Alright, you convinced me. I will sign up for the DAN insurance policy. I have been procrastinating.

:11: OMG over 100 dives without insurnace. You probly drive fast too. :)

I saw a diver sign up online in Cozumel after her saw another in our group leave in an ambuance. 2 days later, he was in the chamber there. It was a rowdy group.
