Look at how much diving has changed over the years.

So what will diving be like in the year 2025 and the year 2050?

remember that 20 years ago in diving....
  • Nitrox was not an option for us.
  • Dive Computer? what is that?

Even long before that, the original dive tables were generated by testing pressure groups on goats and bringing them up too quickly in the pressure chamber. When their legs "bent" from the pain in their joints and they "bent" over, the term "bent" and getting the "bends" was coined. Also the term bent was used by workers in pressurized caisons digging bridge foundations and they "bent" over after coming out of the pressure locks. Doctors said they had the "bends" or "Caisons disease".

Here are a few things that might become "common place" in the year 2025 and 2050?
  • Tri-mix will be as common and everyday as Nitrox
  • Dive computers will be integrated to perform other functions, such as email while on deco?
  • All divers will use a simple propulsion device ran by a tiny micro-battery system.
  • Everyone will be using "COMM" units underwater and they will be extremely cheap
  • This flying-after-diving issue will have been solved by medical science.
  • Dive computers will have functionable GPS/nav-systems integrated in them.
  • CBulla will still be sportin' that speedo

Other questions?
  • What will happen to "old school" dive manufacturers who didn't change with the times?
  • What kind of advancements will be made in thermal protection?
  • Will we ever breath oxygen enriched liquids (oxygenated fluorocarbon emulsion) like they did in "The Abyss" ?

Anyway... just thoughts for discussion and for others to add to as to what diving might be like in 50 years...

what do you see happening in the future?

All the stuff we dive now would be 'vintage' :D

I wanna see "liquid air" in our tanks.

I'd also like to see a thin wetsuit (3mm or thinner) that can provide the same if not more thermal protection than a 7mm. Maybe made of another material?

Tankless diving, mechanical gills will extract your breathing gas directly from the water. Working prototypes already exist.

Automatic buoyancy control in your BC. Adjust to neutral, positive, or negative and it will maintain that level as you ascend or descend.

Ascent rate control. Related to above, set to safe ascent and enjoy the ride to your automatic safety stop.

Hmmm. What if we didn't have a BC or wings at all? Just lots of microtubes running through our exposure suit. Buoyancy controlled by how many tubes active, trim controlled by which tubes active.

--you'll get your cards back timely from your agency
-- your shop will carry the equipment you want to buy
--no one with less than 4 years diving experience wil be a DM; no one with less than 6 years diving will be an Instructor; no one with less than 8 yeards diving will be able to train instructors.

by 2050:

-- PADI's classes will be implanted directly onto your cerebral cortex in 20 seconds
-- Banks will offer loans on real estate to purchase diving equipment
-- the number of worthless posts on ScubaBoard will finally be matched by the number of useful posts

Dive computers will monitor the O2, CO2, & nitrogen levels in your bloodstream. Doppler sensors will detect micro-bubble formation and adjust settings based on your personal physiology through a learning function.

Mixed gasses will be part of the "Discover Scuba" intro training.

Rebreathers will become very common and inexpensive.

Charter flights to/from common dive destinations will operate at increased cabin pressure over 1 atmosphere to allow a dive on the way to the airport.

Lets see according the scare tactic enviro nazi's:

We will be ocean diving in Missouri because global warming has melted EVERYTHING.

There won't be any marine life cause the water is too warm.

We'll all be breathing from tanks all the time cause the air will have to be cleaned before you can breath it.

Ohh and oceanic will have actually released a commerical version of the HUD mask.

Actually, I'm betting by then, PADI will have a "learn to dive and become an instructor all in one weekend" course.
