I think I know your instructor Mitch, agreed....Free flows can be caused by first or second stage failures, part of your o/w training should be practicing breathing off of a secondary while pressing the purge button. This procedure is basically sipping air off of the free flowing reg while holding it to the side of your mouth. However, if your buddy is near by this procedure is basically null and void since he/she is your backup air supply. If you migrate into diving with doubles a whole new set of procedures for free flow will have to be learned.

BTW, you CAN speak through your reg underwater, not something taught in the o/w course.....

Nice! and rly? thats cool, small state, lol. i dunt even know what doubles is, guess ill find out sometime.

Doubles are doubled up tanks. You are carrying two tanks banded together instead of one. That also means two first stages, one on each tank. If we meet on the 15th I will have at least one set in the truck.
By all means ASK QUESTIONS. Any of us will answer if we know it.
Don't worry too much about trim in the water it will come with time. Just be glad that you know about it. I taught myself with help from a few others.

oooo, ok, sounds good. the 15th seems good right now atleast, I have a class earlier that day, but thats ok.

Sounds like a buddy I had in the Bahamas. She talked non stop the whole trip. Even being underwater with a reg didn't stop her, she just kept on going,..... talking to herself.:shakehead:

Ok, question for you all. What regulators do you all like or prefer? I know that I dont want to rent regulators, dont know what its been through or last time it was serviced. I am looking for a inexpensive workhorse that is easy to maintain, heard the TUSA regulators are good for those... and input?

I have 5 Scubapro MK25/S600 regulators (2 recreational reg sets, 2 for my double cylinders & 1 for a decompression bottle reg). They are not inexpensive by any means (retail for $695/ each, or so), I'll be the first to admit it, but they WILL deliver the air I want &/or need at any time. When I'm on a more difficult dive, & the "you know what" hits the fan, I want to be able to breathe. I used to have some Sherwood regulators- a Brut (very low end) & an Oasis. Compared to the Scubapros, in my opinion, they breathed like a soda straw (aka very difficult). For ordinary recreational diving, I would say any decent name brand regulator will most likely work. If you plan on expanding your horizons,... then you may want to look for a higher performing regulator. It really all depends on where you may want to take your diving. I tend to encourage people to buy the best regualtor they can afford. It is your life support below the surface.

I've got some 7.25 tank bands you can borrow JP.....

Thanks for the offer, but I've got some bands already. I just need to get off my duff and order a manifold.

Unless you want to send your regs off for service (nothing wrong with that BTW) look at what the local dealers sell. I think mostly what you'll find around here is ScubaPro, Auqualung, and Oceanic. All really good brands with Oceanic being the most readily available. All of my regs are Aeris/Oceanic (same company) or Dive Rite. I've switched over to Dive Rite because I can get parts and do the service myself.

sounds great, I have heard some stuff about the epic edge, and it being a good regulator... any input on that?

Edge regulators are made by Ocean Divers Taiwan. Ocean Divers Taiwan is an OEM that also makes Dive Rite, ScubaMax, Promate, and Sea Elite. They probably make many others but these are the ones that are obvious. Although I have not personally used the Edge Epic my bet is that it's a fine regulator. If it's one your considering try Phil at Discount Scuba Gear at DiveSports.com - Buy Scuba Diving Equipment & Snorkeling Equipment you'll have a hard time finding a better price and his service is second to none.
