My wife had her torch confiscated two years ago as being a dangerous weapon. She had previously travelled many times with it without problems. It is a canister type battery pack that is quite long. Funny how for years it was okay but one person decided that it was now dangerous. Unfortunately, in Australia all the security for planes is done by private firms and each airport and even each airline has a different firm. There is no consistency at all. Brisbane International Airport is by far the worst offender!

Weight is always an issue with checked bags. Not as much with carry on here. So anything small but heavy goes carry on including regs, can lights, etc. anything prohibited like knives and spears gets checked. I have had a carry on that weighed over 70 pounds. I hoisted it in the overhead over someone else's seat just in case it collapsed.
Keep in mind that some airlines do in fact impose a weight limit on carry-on luggage. I've only ever seen it once (Sunwing, with a ridiculous limit of 5 kg per bag) but yes, they did weigh the bags and did make us move stuff from the carry-on to the checked baggage because it was too heavy.
