Hi all
I started diving after i left ireland 4 years ago, and this june i'm going home for 3 weeks, to Killaloe, Co Clare. I've already been in contat with the Kilkee Dive Shop about doing some diving with them, but I'm wondering if there are any dive sites in ireland that are must see? I'm going home on my own, and none of my friends at home dive, so it has to be somewhere there is a diver shop that can maybe arrange for a dive buddy for me. Is there any other way to find a dive buddy in Ireland?

Help Appreciated.

Maurice

Maurice,

Hope your visit back went well and you had some great dives.

I'm heading over to Southern Ireland June 05 and would like to do a dive or two. Did you come across and recommendations for sites and/or operators?

Thank you.

Kurt

Seadeuce,

Thank you for responding. We're hoping to finalize our route by January for an end of June - early July 2005 tour. We are going to do 8-10 days in Southern Ireland starting at Shannon and ending in Dublin or vice versa. We're open for suggestions.

This is a tour trip for my parent's family. My father, 79 yrs old, is all Irish (his original last name is Diggin) and has never been to Ireland. I have 5 brothers and sisters and we all have families who hope to go with my mother and father. Thus it's a tour of your beautiful country and wonderful history.

My daughter Amy, now a rescue diver who learned to dive in Australia when on a college semester two years ago, and I, an old time diver (prior BC's and computers) who just restarted diving two years ago (yes so I could dive the Barrier Reef in Australia when I visted Amy) and am doing my advance dives in December at Key Largo, Florida, are the only two divers. A few others do snorkel. Thus we probably will only get to do a couple morning dives when there - but can't miss the opportunity.

I have a sister who is a boater and she would like to do some boating too - maybe the same time we dive.

I'm open to suggestions to get the best couple dives and have time to try to influence the travel route.

Amy has a degree in Natural Resources with a Marine Science Minor and is getting her teaching certification in biology. I'm a "natureman and adventurer" (also do white water rafting, bodyboarding, skiing, etc..). We would lean towards the nature aspect of dives, but would not rule out a "must see" other type of dive. Also don't mind paying more to dive in with a small party, stay away from the volume tourist sites and to get to the more pristine dive sites.

Any other suggestions on non-diving "must sees or dos", especially related to your beautiful countryside are welcome.

Really appreciate your efforts in providing advice and guidance.

Hi Kurt,

I'm new to the board, so am joining this thread a bit late and may not be much help if you've finalised your plans. I've done nearly all my diving in Ireland and in quite a few different spots throughout the country. If you are starting in the southwest, Baltimore would certainly be worth a visit. The area has quite a number of wrecks, including the enormous Kowloon bridge that are well worth checking out. The Fastnet rock is another fabulous dive in the same area that I think you would all enjoy. As you move along the coast (depending on your travel route) sites such as Hook Head (Co. Wexford), the Mugglins (and many other terrific sites in Dublin Bay), Strangford Lough (Co. Antrim, NI), Rathlin Island (off North coast), Aranmore (the one near Burtonport, Co. Donegal), St. John's Point, Co. Donegal and Killary fjord (Co. Galway) are all ones that are worth a visit. If you already have a specific plan where I could suggest particular sites along the way just PM me.

Hope this helps,

Subaquaman,

Thank you for your reply. I hope you find ScubaBoard as helpful as I have.

Based upon an earlier ScubaBoard contact to my thread by Nigel who lives in Tralee I decided to come to Ireland before the rest of the 18 from my Williams' family so I can spend a few days diving instead of trying to just fit it in. I'm going to use Dingle as my base for diving and then join up with my Williams family tour in Killarney. I'm fortunate that Nigel so kindly offered to arrang my dives in the Dingle area.

There may be one more option for me to dive when I leave Waterford and I was looking at Hooks Head which you mention. Thus any additional info or advice you can provide me on Hooks Head would be appreciated.

Just sorry I won't have time to do diving out of your home town of Dublin. But I will spend two nights and one full day touring your city after I leave Waterford and before I go to Galaway.

Thanks.

Kurt,

It's great to hear that you have something planned to visit Ireland, no matter where it is you choose to dive. I'm admittedly very biased towards Dublin but do concede that the South and West coasts are some of the best diving in the country. I'm glad to hear you've been in touch with another avid Irish diver who I'm sure had no difficulty in showing their enthusiasm for Irish diving!

As for Hook, you can start by checking out this website and I will hopefully be able to get you some more information (possibly a contact) on Hook for bottle fills/local knowledge. I haven't dived it myself but have heard great reports of the site and should be able to get you a run down on it. It'd be a good one to finish with!

Hopefully there'll be another time when you get to dive with us in Dublin and even while your here if you'd like some more detail on the area I'd be glad to help.

Hopefully get you that info soon enough.
