I'm a Fish!
Hello

I have an Aladin Air Z computer with transmitter. I love it but I am looking to get rid of it and find another brand. It's a great computer but the battery changing is to much hassle for me.

Is there anyone who has been diving with another brand who uses the transmitter as well and wants to share his experiences? The thing I would need is a divecomputer where I can change the battery myself.

Cheers

Anyone interested in buying an Aladin Air Z dive computer with transmitter? ;)

How often does the battery need to be changed?

Suunto Vytec allows you to change the battery yourself on both computer and transmitter.

Suunto D9 allows DIY transmitter battery. Computer will need to go back to agent with the tools.

No experience with other brands and models.

I have the Aeris Elite (Thanks Larry:D ) and love it. Still going strong. 50 dives and still haven't had to change the battery once. It has been very reliable, it is smaller than some wrist units but still large enough to read easily and to push buttons while using thick gloves. I highly suggest it. I'm sure others will chime in with personal experiences and other brands. You will likely get alot of Suunto users and for good reason. I liked that one too but couldn't justify spending $300+ more for it over the aeris elite.

I have the Oceanic Atom.....both the computer and transmitter have user replicable batteries.

Good computer, easy to use, very flexible in the profile (can go from very liberal to very conservative.....you set it as you see it fit). Excellent transmitter/computer contact. Small enough to wear as a watch, yet large enough for a simple glance under water to see all the data you need.

Do not like the Suunto's...they are way to "rigid" in their profile with no way of adjusting it.

How is it a hassle? I am still on my original batteries after 5 years. I have the "free batteries for life" card, so when they go the replacement is free. So after another couple of years I send it in.

I checked out the Aeris before buying my Aladin. I had trouble reading it above water, let alone below. YMMV.

Nothing personal, but how was it hard to read? Those numbers are huge! It has a light! What does "checked it out" mean? That's the first time I have heard this one. I assume you wear glasses? :glassez:

I refer you (Mycroft) to this recent SB thread where the vast majority of the divers say aeris/oceanic (basically same displays) are best in terms of ease of viewing...http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=108113

Mycroft does bring up a good point though. Why do you want to get rid of your air z? It's a very nice computer. It would stink of your batteries died on vacation but that's not very likely as it should warn you long in advance. Now if your just plain bored with it then that's another issue. LOL. That I understand!

I have the Vytec with transmitter. I love it. I haven't changed the battery yet though, I think it lasts a few years. Even if it's hard, if I only have to do it every few years, why worry?
