I just wouldn’t bother and dive without AI?

The dive shop might be not be happy about you messing with rented kit - especially if you are a new diver. If you tip well they might attach it for you - but then they are attaching an unknown piece of gear to their reg.

Also, if you are on your first dives after OW and go with guided dives, the guide might want to physically check your gas (especially if you get confused, don’t signal well etc) - much easier with an SPG.
 
All of the dive operators that I use would not mind if I need to change the configuration of their gear and certainly would not mind if you bring your own transmitter. This questions can easily be asked beforehand when you choosing your operator. So do not let above comments to dissuade you from getting an AI integrated computer and a transmitter! They are very convenient and reliable. However, invest in your own regulator - it is well worth it in my book even if you are an infrequent diver.
