This was found to be a hoax wasn't it? Maybe there needs to be a big sign on the homepage that says beware of DAN/SSS hoax.

I've got plenty of bones to pick with insurance companies. However, from my perspective, they are the way they are because there are so many people out there trying to cheat them. In the 20 years that I've been intimately involved with the insurance industry I've seen an immense change in how things are done and see a great correlation with the increase in fraudulent claims. That being the case, insurers walk a fine line between not victimizing their insureds and not being victimized themselves.

Is this really too much to ask?

Could be. You want a LOT, potentially. Some places this could include massive costs which you are somehow expecting other people to bear in the hopes that you will later have the means to pay. All to treat you for an injury resulting from a voluntary action on your part.

Now I'm not exactly waiting for anyone's credit card approval before calling out an ambulance, but in a non-life threatening situation it is not unheard of for providers to insist on proof of payment before initiating treatment.

I spoke with a DAN rep the other day. There are only 3 chambers included in this and they're in cities/areas with other chambers available. It's basically a whole bunch of BS.

Before I went off on my world wide "dive like a mental patient" adventure, I made sure that getting bent was covered by my health insurance. It was. DAN is a great thing to have, I use it myself to expedite service. But realize that most normal health insurance covers diving. Use DAN? You bet--when you're diving, the 1st thing that people will look for is your DAN card. But lets face it--if you need a hyperbaric chamber, you need a freakin hyperbaric chamber. You'll end up in one. Use DAN, but also expect your health ins. to cover it too.

That would be great, if it's acccurate. Did you get an ok from your health provider? I heard that most, if not all, health ins companies will not cover you because you are engaging in a risky sport, or some such thing. I think there is some confusion on that score?

Undercurrent magazine is reporting this so that gives it credibility. They are not known for printing BS. I think they must have researched this before they printed it? Since you spoke to DAN that carrys some weight, but might they be saying it's a hoax so as not to have divers seek other ins carriers and they go out of business?
