Christi,

The reality of the situation is that if one is incapacitated, he/she will have no way to direct the rescue team to a particular chamber. So if you have DAN, and you get stuck in the wrong chamber, your wallet is going for a rollercoaster ride until someone pays up. Unfortunately, part of that cost may be borne by the victim with the current situation.

I did just notice that DAN's new press release shows Coz as being one of the areas where SSS WILL accept DAN. That is very good news for you.

The rescue teams in Cozumel know exactly where to take divers...that's not an issue. Despite what some would like to believe, people in Cozumel are pretty smart and are very familiar with diving, safety protocol, rescue protocol, etc.

Additionally, the dive op themselves SHOULD assist a diver who has a problem while diving with them.

There are three chambers in Cozumel, one is among the list of chambers no longer accepting DAN as direct payment. This is a non-issue to me since I don't use that chamber o begin with and my divers know they will be taken care of in the unfortunate event of an accident.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't see a big conspiracy to defame anyone, or anything really nefarious going on. Looks like a case of he said, she said.

Christi,

The competence of the rescue personnel was never an issue. Nor was the dive op.

My point was that if the rescue personnel should take an unconscious victim to a chamber that doesn't take their insurance, that person may be out huge sums of money.

If you are telling me that none of the rescue personnel will use that chamber, then this is a non-issue. Might even force the chamber to change their policy.

I guess one point I was trying to make is that the dive op is usually the one to tell the the rescue team which chamber to go to. All dive ops received the e-mail...and prior to that, we were all very familiar with the problems.

As far as the chamber changing thier policy, I wouldn't hold my breath. I also wouldn't place all of the "blame" here on the chamber based on what I know.

What is "reasonable and customary" lies somewhere in the middle of what DAN and the SSS chamber want.

Recompression Chambers Reject DAN America Insurance: The SSS Recompression chamber network, operator of hyperbaric chambers in a dozen popular dive destinations, has announced that some facilities will no longer accept the Divers Alert Network (DAN) America insurance for payments at some chambers: Nassau, Bahamas; Cabo San Lucas, Merida and Cancun, Mexico. SSS has other chambers, which they say may also stop accepting DAN insurance payments: Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen, Mexico; Ambergris Cay, Belize; the Galapagos Islands, and five in Thailand. In a prepared statement, SSS declared it could "no longer tolerate unpaid services, and since the only insurer in the world who has refused to settle our bills is DAN America, some SSS chambers have no other choice but to ask DAN America patients to pay for services when rendered and file the claims themselves with DAN America." SSS owner Mauricio Moreno told Undercurrent that their chambers are still "duty bound to render services despite a patients' ability to pay." SSS has filed a lawsuit against DAN over the matter.

DAN issued a statement saying: "The dispute involves what constitutes reasonable and customary charges for hyperbaric chamber treatment. Even though some insurers may have signed exclusive arrangements with [SSS] in exchange for lower rates, DAN believes exclusive arrangements are not in the diver's best interest, when the diver needs help at the nearest available chamber to avoid medically unacceptable delays." DAN CEO Dan Orr told Undercurrent that discussions are ongoing and he hopes to work out a solution "that's right for DAN members as well as the industry."

This whole situation is appalling!

I don't care who's to blame, and I don't care what the real story is.

If I'm in an accident, anywhere in the world:
I want the people who are with me to arrange my evac before they do anything, before calling DAN or whatever insurance I carry for that matter. I want to be flown to the CLOSEST facility or at least the closest one suitable to treat my injury. I want to be treated ASAP. I don't want to pay a penny up front. Save my ***, then worry about the damn bill. And lastly I want my insurance to pay for my treatment.

Is this really too much to ask?

And people wonder why insurance companies and doctors disgust me! My apologies those out there, who don't fit the stereotypes and who really are in it to help people.
