I don't mind spending the money but I notice that GUE doesn't post prices for there classes or I just cant find it. I assume that the cost is the same for any GUE instructor lead class.

I'm a spreadsheet guy. I like to plan out my goals with the finances included. Does GUE do this for a specific reason?

I assume that the cost is the same for any GUE instructor lead class.

This is an incorrect assumption. Every tech instructor I know from any agency sets their own rates (be they daily rates, flat course rates, including materials/certification costs/etc or not, incremental expenses, etc). They're somewhat arbitrary and you'll need to ask that question when you interview your instructor.

GUE doesn't post their prices. Nor does PADI, TDI, IANTD, or any other agency. That's because the agency doesn't control the prices, the instructor does.

As a wild ballpark, Fundies tends to run $600-800 in instructor fees.

gsk3 is correct - GUE Tech -1 and Cave -1 Are more but you need to talk to the instructor

Thanks! I had thought there was a set price for the class. + gas, boat, and travel for instructor if needed. Now I know.

If you've got to bring in a non-local instructor to your area or travel to meet an instructor, helping to fill multiple classes can help keep the cost down. For instance, my instructor taught two back-to-back tech2 classes in Portofino. So we all just split his travel costs amongst 5 people instead of only 2 or 3. So if some divers in your area want fundies and others might want tech1, it might be advantageous to work out a 'package deal' and have one instructor teach both classes.

Just a thought.

I've paused at the cost of the dives themselves (after gear and training). Tech is not in my short term future...but I can dream.

Here's my personal quandary as someone looking to move from recreational instruction to being a tech student:

Gear costs money. Fine. Training costs money. Fine. Travel costs money. Fine. But when you're looking at all three, to get the level of training I'd like, I'd be looking at another 5 figure budget.

So i'm going down the same path from rec. So far, to buy just about everything, I reckon I've spent $3k or so. The most expensive was the can light. I figure another $1000 in tanks to buy and i'll be set with my base gear.

My GUE Fundies course next week is $1000.

I'm then flying to Thailand in June, and doing 3 weeks of diving. The entire travel and accom cost will be around $2500.
I haven't finalised the courses or who with yet, but as an example Pro Tech offer the following for $3300, with Adv Wreck about another $600

  • TDI Nitrox Diver
  • TDI Advanced Nitrox Diver
  • TDI Decompression Procedures Diver
  • TDI Extended Range & TDI Trimix Diver
  • Manuals for each course
  • Certification for each course

  • Full Technical equipment hire
  • All boat trips (transfers, breakfast, lunch, water etc.)
  • All Gas including Nitrox and Helium
  • Recompression Chamber tour and introduction
  • Tech Equipment workshop and 20% discount on all equipment purchases

Wow. I've only just added it up, yep that's over $10k. But it includes 3 weeks of diving in Thailand. Some people pay that much for a live-aboard.

Zero to hero technical training? Wow. That's just horrifying.
