Mahhhhh RRRRRessss

:)

Phil -- are you implying that you roll the "r"? Seems like that's the way a fellow told me to pronounce it when the subject came up just last week.

Well we did not go all the way to Italy to figure this out. At first I thought to sit on the sidelines and watch this because no matter how you pronounce it I think it is great that everyone cares so much, THANK YOU.

I have heard many, it is not: an elected official (mayor), a planet (mars) or a plural horse (...)

It does have two syllables, MAR ESS. Depending on your accent (Italian, NYC-mine)
the emphasis changes slightly, on either syllable it may change and your ability to roll an "r" gets involved.

Mares was the last name of the founder of the company.

Thanks to all

Phil

Grazie Signore Mintz,

I shall speak the name with the confidence of a native Italiano forever more.

The founders name is Ludovico Mares, he’s Italian obviously. If you look up how to say mares in Italian you find the same pronunciation as the word mares(as in female horses). It’s M-air-z

Since the Mares people just returned from Italy, could one of you (Zak or Phil) please give us the "correct" pronunciation of the brand? I've heard it a couple of different ways.

Mayors (city officials)
Mars (the red planet)
Mar-rees (2 syllables like marries except with a long "r")
None of the above?

Also, where does the name come from? Does it mean anything in Italian?

TIA (thanks in advance)

I thought Ludovico's father was Austrian and he was born in Croatia.

18 years later…I’ll defer to whatever @Angelo Farina says.

Ha, I thought it meant seas, but mare is sea, however the plural is mari.

Made me think of some real Italians ( not the ones born in NY) I worked with in a Italian restaurant, people would ask for marinara sauce, Italians would go, “sure, here’s the seafood in a tomato sauce you ordered”
It was also quite amusing seeing them flat out say no to people asking them to grate some cheese over their seafood pasta, they’d fight you over it lol.
