Cold pockets of water at depth are normally from fresh water springs coming from under ground rivers ashore. They happen all year long and if big, normally appear as "oily water" at the fresh water/salt water interface. I can't think of any topside weather to cause such a thing. i've run into them many times and in summer find them refreshing.

No oily water. Just occasional cold water. Really really cold water. And occasionally warm water where I wanted to park myself.

Actually, in the water it is not bad at all. It is just in the transition from wet suit to one of our warm parkas that the chill really hurts. If you don't have something dry and warm to slip into quickly its ugly.

I have made five dive trips to Rivera Maya in the last six years and only once I was warm enough in a wetsuit. The rest of the time I missed my drysuit.

Holy rain this am! My casa has water dripping from the ceiling.

I was thinking the cold pockets were from the cooler wind and some evaporative cooling of surface water, that being more dense, and sinking in various pockets. But... I did see some of the oily looking water, so maybe it was cold fresh water pockets.

The wind switched directions about 3 or 4 pm yesterday back to an easterly (roughly) flow. Temps climbed, too. Back to your normally-schedule programming!

And it’s pouring again.

Not slowing the hummingbirds down, they are swarming the feeder like flies.

[edit] it’s really coming down in buckets

You know that he didn't mean water with oil in it, right? The refractive index of fresh water emanating from cold underwater springs is different from that of seawater, and when they mix it looks oily and sometimes you can't see though it.

Yes, I did.

Actually the proper name for the "oily looking" water is a halocline. That is where fresh and salt water mix. On most wall dives they can be encountered, especially after heavy rain on the island that creates more hydraulic pressure on the underwater springs…thus more fresh water flow.

In looking at wind guru for the week beginning on Monday the 15th, it looks like all of next week is looking very windy with the wind from the NW moving to the N and then NE. This would look like Monday - Thursday is questionable diving especially for the small boats

I know forecasts can change especially that far out but figured I'd ask the experts what you all think about next week. I arrive on Sunday the 14 and leave on Saturday the 20th. It would cost me a little to redeposit my airline miles and part of my hotel deposit, but I'm not keen about losing 4 of my 5 days of diving.

Thx

Still a ways out but beginning the 15th it appears to shift above due north so it looks hopeful. Its not just speed but direction, anything westerly off due north and above 10 Kts is cause for concern. I was planning to come down this weekend but think I will try and shift to the following weekend.
