Okay, one more serious thought before this thread devolves into complete sillyness. What if an actual emergency incident were to occur to the people in the class? The same people who had been yelling Help all afternoon? The people who were being ignored because everyone in the scuba park now knew they were in a class?

And Frank, I seem to remember establishing that cheese whiz, and by extension, all cheese products, should not be taken in to feed the fish but I don't remember a similar ban on pizza. At least not cheese free pizza.

This is why it's not a good idea to have students shouting on a Rescue course. This goes for yelling 'Pizza', 'Peaches', or 'Help'. Not everybody knows of the 'Pizza' shout, and not everybody will think "Hummm... must be a rescue class" - not all divers, and definitely not all non-divers. When people are a little bit farther away and can't make out what is actually being shouted, but can still hear a commotion and see divers flapping about on the surface, the emergency services may still be wrongly called in this situation. By having my students speak, not yell, the word 'help', so I can hear them from a couple of feet away, I don't have to worry about being ignored, because any shouting will be for real. I also don't have to worry about alarming others into calling for unwanted assistance.

Today at CSSP I was diving near the plane. Before descending, I overhead an instructor on the dock telling the bystanders that he was holding a rescue class so ignore anyone saying "help" and these were PADI rules. I must say, it made me very uncomfortable because if I was in danger, I probably would have been ignored; bystanders would have thought I was part of the class.

Just my .02.

Some INSTRUCTORS just don't get it.....:shakehead

Realize a couple things. Alot of shops do not read these boards. They are still under the misconception that it is standard to call for help.

I was also told in my last staff meeting that the North Texas Scuba Retailers Assn is talking over this issue. Hopefully a resolution will be reached soon. Then it has to trickle down to the instructors.

Hopefully, next season this won't be a problem.

Next season may be too late. Whoever is up at the front desk should be informing them of the rules when the instructor checks in.

Did you say Free Pizza !!! Cool ! :D
Speaking of Cheese and extensions...John just called today to order a custom harness for a cheese popper/ potato cannon like mine except he wants it to be a dual can side mount.

It may be a designated rescue class area, but the plane is a very popular attraction.

Cruiser's point overrides any desire for realism in a training exercise. A primary lesson in rescue technique IMHO should be teaching the class to avoid unnecessary risks. (such as having some poor sap lose it where a rescue class was thrashing about before they all headed home)

Help means "help me, I'm scared" and is a command that should never be allowed to be questioned.

Help! I'm jonesing for a dive with Texass!
