I plan to shore dive Casino Point in Catalina soon. I know there are lockers close by when you're diving. However what can you do with your stuff when you want to have dinner or walk around? Any suggestions?

Thanks Terry

You can either leave it in the lockers or arrange with the baggage handlers at the pier (don't know their contact info, sorry) to shlep it back to the pier and store it there for you while you have dinner and hang out. I'm lazy, I'd use the baggage folks.

Can they be trusted with all your gear?

Absolutely. Thousands of divers go to Avalon each year. Most of us don't use the lockers and I've only heard a couple of thefts. Avalon is a small town and tourists are its life-blood. You can even leave your gear outside while you go into a restaurant, without worry. It's more convenient to use the luggage storage at the landing so that you don't have to schlep it around.

Have a great time and report back when you get home.

On the rare occasions when I need to store gear temporarily (such as when I'm returning later for a night dive) I use the Dive Park lockers. They are $0.75 each time you lock them. I have stored several tanks and my weight belt, etc., in one.

Jlyle is correct in saying that you can carry your gear into town with you and leave it outside a restaurant without much concern. Things are generally pretty safe here. We have had a few thefts at the dive park, but they are (hopefully) rare. I often leave everything (including camera and computer) at the Park when I need to go somewhere for a short time.

FYI - the number for the Catalina Baggage people is 310-510-0766. Although they're always there, I feel more comfortable calling them in advance and confirming that they will be there when my boat arrives.
Have a fun trip! Btw - when are you going?

I've heard of a couple of thefts lately.

Aside from the dive lockers at Casino Point, there are lockers you can rent by the boat dock ... the ones by the boat dock seem to jam less and, if they do, there's someone nearby to give you your $$ back. I haven't been to the point in awhile, but those ones always seemed to jam up due to rust.

When I want to leave my gear at the point I put it inside a wire mesh travel bag and lock it to the flagpost with a bicycle lock....now that you can't lock up your stuff during flights, it's about the only thing I can use the mesh bag for!
