I am finally feeling old!.......lol
My 12 year old son was recently certified in Maui a few weeks ago and when he gets back he says to me, when we going diving. So, I tell him that here, its not like Maui, the water is colder and the visibility is no where close. Still, he bugs me into booking a trip to Catalina.
I was interested in seeing how he would handle a 7mil suit and hood in colder water so I booked us a trip on the Sundiver Express.
Conditions were great top side. The ocean was calm, there were pods of dolphins swimming with us on the way over and the day looked like it could not get any better. Once we hit the water, the visibility was not what I expected. Deeper water (40 feet only based on his limit) was pretty murky so we headed to the kelp forest. We made our way along the edge of the kelp and then started to work our way between the kelp and rocks looking for critters. Based on the conditions and the fact that I was focusing more in on the safety of my son, my pictures basically sucked. Oh well, next time with him will for sure be different.
I told him on the boat before we left that if he showed me that he could hang with his dad then I would get him his own gear.
Based on how well he did, I am about to get a little lighter in the wallet but I am a proud dad at the same time so I guess it balances out.
