Mo2vation:
It stinks the fill station at the point isn't open during the week in Winters

Is that so? I was planning to take the Express with some friends on Tuesday the 2nd. How would one be able to get fills on the island during weekdays?

There are two dive shops in Avalon...it's a schlep, but you can get rentals and fills.

And run tanks back and forth to either town or the pier.

Its no fun.

I don't rent tanks there - I dive a 130, and they don't rent anything that big.

The bright side of getting canceled yesterday is that they DO fill on Fridays - so if I get over there today I likely only have one run into town.... tomorrow they'll be filling at the Pointe!

Looks like it's cleaned up quite a bit this AM. Winds have also calmed substantially. They also look like they're forecasted to shift to NE later tonight ... that should help lay it down further for tomorrow. The wind swell also looks like it's fading. It's still a crossed-up/disorganized ~6/7ft from the West, but definitely dropping on the buoys. It could be a little rough crossing, but it shouldn't be too bad once you get in the shadow of the Island. Looks like you may be OK ... just make sure you bring your sea legs ;)

Ah, but NE winds won't lay things down here in Avalon. I haven't been out of the house yet today (editing this AM), but the winds have diminished greatly. Hopefully the seas have as well.

You're right Dr Bill ... but at least it will help make the crossing a little nicer :D

From a landlocked POV, the winds are gusting over 40 mph here in the 951. :(

We were on the only boat to get over to Catalina on Wednesday (the 6:15 AM one), and man was it a wild ride!! At least Avalon was quiet for a couple of days.
It was VERY windy and the water looked pretty rowdy at the point, so we didn't get wet until Friday morning.
Instead, we spent Thursday volunteering with the Catalina Island Conservancy at their native plant nursery (Dr. Bill, do you know Whitey? He volunteered with us-)

Once we got into the water, it was a pretty nice dive with good visibility and I was able to take some pictures. It was worth waiting out the wind and waves for a sunny, calm day. We were the only ones in the park besides Mo2vation and his dive buddies, and I think the fish missed seeing divers the past couple days ;) ...
Here's some pictures from this week in Avalon:

Sure do know Whitey... a great guy and a fantastic volunteer.

When I was V.P. of the Conservancy I helped gather the funds to build the new native plant nursery. Janet, my GF at the time, was director of the nursery and she was the one who planned and built it with a lot of help from volunteers like yourselves and the Conservancy's facilities management dept.
