I morphed a couple of the suggestions, and came up with these, stainless quick links, less than $5 each at Home Depot. They slide right into the loop above the shoulder strap buckle, and a snap clip hooks in with no effort.

Thanks for all the help!

These things are great and available in many sizes. They are a quick replacement for split rings, snap shackles, and such.

I guess what I was looking for was something like a horizontal velcro loop that would fit around the shoulder strap, with the d-ring hanging down vertically from it. Obviously it wouldn't hold a lot of weight, but I don't need it to.

There aren't many left but if you can find a cobbler you can get heavy items sewn for a reasonable price. My wife made a cloth dive flag that I had sewn onto a SMB by a cobbler for $15.00 the minimum price for sewing. Climbing equipment; there may be some kind of webbing loop already sewn that you can use.

Like others I use a weight keeper but, that works best on a web harness.

There is another way to do this but you would need to know how to splice. That is a round long splice on the flashlight and a figure 8 long splice on the water bottle.
