Stretch, stretch and stretch some more

(1) Do a few lat stretches (arms over head bent at the elbow -- reach across with one hand to the opposite elbow and gently pull, slightly bending away sideways towards the side of the arm that you are reaching with). Repeat, gradually increasing the pull each time.

(2) Extend one arm over your head, elbow bent, with the elbow pointed towards the ceiling and your hand reaching straight down thee back of your neck. Take your other hand and gently pull down on your elbow. Repeat, gradually increasing the pull each time.

Stretching can really make a difference.

I do recall reading an incident recently where a diver died doing this. Jumped in without his buddy, forgot to open his valves, not positively bouyany, and drowned with full doubles.

Wouldn't the setup be more important than trying to stretch to reach the valve? If the setup is right, then reaching the valve would be no problem, right? At what height should the valve be relative to the backplate or the wing?

Your trim will vary depending on how you have it set.

The important thing is that you can get to it. If you can't, you can DIE if a mistake is made.

Being able to reach your valves is a PRIMARY skill.

Sometimes reaching the valve can be harder than you think, especially if you are not very flexible and are wearing heavy exposure protection....this even if the valve is right behind your head.
