Can anyone recommend any of the campgrounds in Key Largo? We are going for a week of diving in Key Largo, and need a place to camp the 3rd week in September. We can't camp in any of the State Parks in the Keys (such as the John Pennekamp Coral Reef S.P.), as we will have our German Shepherd with us, and they don't allow dogs :11:
America Outdoor Camper resort looks nice, but is very pricey, what about Kings Kamp? or Rock Harbor Marina? or any other suggetions would be wonderful.
I think we have narrowed down the dive op to Silent World.
Thanks for all your help.

The only one I'm familiar with is American Campground and I know they are pricey, but it's a great place to camp. Not familiar with the other two campgrounds you're talking about. Do you know what MM they are located at?

Good luck and if we can answer any questions let don't hesitate to call.

there is a KOA off of Long Key - it is actually on Fiesta Key. I have camped there many times, but I like the state parks better. Thankfully, they dont let people camp with pets

The KOA is about, a good, 30 minutes from Key Largo.

I have not been to KingsKamp, but I have conversed with them through email and they were nothing but nice and very accomodating, I don't know if that says anything about how good the campground is but the pictures were pretty. THey have a website KingsKamp.com

I had booked with them and then suddenly had to cancel and they were very pleasant about the whole thing.

Just be careful to pack plenty of warm clothes, last august my brother and sister did the same thing you are planning and my brother went hypothermic... they eventually were able to find shelter in a private house.

Can anyone comment on their experience with camping at John Pennekamp State Park?

Based on what I have read on the web site they seem to have good facilities and the rates seem reasonable. What am I missing? :06:

Alex

It fills up quickly, reservations can be made online.

One more question for those with experience camping in the keys. My plan is to go sometime in August, dive all day and back to the camp just for sleep. How is the security? Will I need to take my tent down every day pack it in my car while I am out diving or is it safe to leave it up at the camp site? I am not going to leave any valuables behind (I guess it depends on the price you place on a bed after diving all day :eyebrow:) but would like to save some time and work by not having to take the tent down.

I appreciate any comments or experience.

Thanks...

Alex

Hey Misty... check this site out... http://www.petswelcome.com/

Also, make sure you let me know how your trip went. I'll be down that way in March (2006) and was leaning towards using Silent World based on a recommendation from a very close friend here at home.

Have a great trip!! :crafty:
