Hmmm... don't know about these rituals. I had to attend 2-3 weeks of classes and exhibit proficiency in the open ocean before I got my c-card. That was the "ritual" back then!

Walter:
I didn't conjure it up, your instructor did.

was referring to the recovering alcoholic comment. no worries were just having fun and it never gets overboard but if the instructor makes you down a couple of bottles in a row then thats another story.

Before this escalates into drama, keep in mind that in the Philippines the diving community is very small and tight knit. Everyone knows everyone around here or are separated by only 2 degrees. So why would a diving instructor encourage drinking? It is very common to bond with our diving instructors over a beer or two. Besides, drinking is a favourite past time here.

They would, of course, never encourage it before diving or whenever it is dangerous to do so. That would be irresponsible.

EDIT: usually I'm the one who buys the beers for my dive instructor/DM (plus my dive buddies). So maybe I am the one to blame more than my dive instructor.

PS I wish I got a laurel...

im with you on this one chip!

what's wrong with a little ritual? Kanya-kanyang paraan lang yan walang pakialamanan. (We have our own styles, do not meddle) LOL. It doesn't sound rite on an english translation. . . hehe. but ok, we are entitled to our opinions, so . . . ok. . . no comment. :p

One of 'em's a mod here...........
Do they own guns?

This thread makes me very happy that I'm living in Asia (with my heart in the Philippines) and not the states . . . :) Hey, pare, where's my beer???
