Hi there all,

I was just curious as to what people use when rigging gear.

Brass/Stainless swivel hooks or Ali Caribiner's?

I see a fair bit of info out there where they use the brass clips - I guess I was wondering why the use of caribiners is not more prevalent - or is it?

To my way of thinking the Caribiners are easier to handle/clip/unclip. What are the disadvantages?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Caribiners are often called suicide clip in this sport since they can easily admit a passing rope thus snaring the diver. This is well within the realm of possibility around lobster traps and any wreckage that may have accumulated derelict fishing gear as an example.

Also aluminum will be high maintenance in the ocean and AL clips rarely feature SS springs.

Just let me repeat what Spectrum said. Carabiners are NOT suitable for diving. They're hazardous because of the potential for them to grab on anything that can open them.

Stainless Steel bolt snaps are the norm for attaching things to your gear. Brass has the tendency to become stiff and hard to open over time where as SS does not (to the same degree). Using aluminium clips, if you can find something would be an option, but generally, aluminium clips have steel hinge pins and/or springs which rust. If you could find Alu clips with SS hinges and springs then they would be ok as long as they are not carabiner types.

In rockclimbing they we often used those carabines which have some kind of screw-on safety feature on them, so opening them by accident is not possible.

Yeah but in rock climbing if you screw one of those things shut you don't, under any circumstances, want it to go undone.... In diving I'm not sure that the requirement to stay shut "no matter what" is that helpful .... That said, they're certainly better than the click-on types provided they have SS hinge pins and springs.

My experience with aluminum, especially carabiners, is that they stiffen and freeze up after being used in salt water.

Bronze and stainless steel do not.

I'll use a "beaner" to attach my rope to the float and that's all now. I used a 'beaner' for a few items like my slates for teaching until they would unclip for some reason sending them to the bottom.
Now I use SS marine grade bolt snaps on anything I need to clip to my rig. I have found that brass snaps tend to wear out quicker and create sharp edges.

+1

And in case there's any question as to whether it's important to get "Marine Grade" instead of "Run of the Mill" stainless, here's a comparison of the two...

See if you can guess which is which! (HINT: notice which one has the handy "stuck-in-the-open-position" feature...)

I use one of these to attach my car key on a split ring. And I also use a couple of regular al carabineers in the front, where if anything is snagged it's apparent.

"Carabiners are Satan's toys - if you use them you will burn in hell!"
