Thanks for the help (incl. the PMs). I've made changes based on the suggestions you've made. See if this works better (and is still DIR):

FredT BP SS .188 long 9# (LONG is Fred's NORMAL size. He also has X-Long and short)
FredT STA 5#
Oxycheq Harness Kit (four bent D-rings, one D-ring, belt buckle, crotch strap and webbing).
FredT P weight 7#
Oxycheq single tank 45# wings

I have been PM'd that the 45# wing is overkill, but according to other posts, the 45# is EXACTLY the same wing as the 30# (same exterior profile and dives the same), except that the inside bellows expands if fully inflated. http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=33059&page=8&pp=15&highlight=oxycheq

Does this all sound better?

Sounds good. I dont know about the p-weight though. That might make you turtle, especially with the heavy BP and the 5# STA.

Rick Inman:
It looks like (if Turbo Tax is right) I will soon be buying a BP/W setup. I'm not DIR, but posting here 'cause I plan on taking the DIRF class in the future and want to be sure my BP/W setup in DIRF approved.
I am 6', 185#, dive dry, cold water, single tank rec diver. Here's what I'm looking at:

FredT BP SS long 17#
FredT STA 5#
FredT Harness Kit (incl. 6 yards of 2” heavy webbing, 2 ea. 45° Billy rings, 1 ea. 90° Billy ring, heavy keeper, light keeper, heavy D-ring, light D-ring and SST pin buckle).
FredT P weight 7#
Oxycheq single tank 45# wings

Is this EVERYTHING I'll need (in the BP/W area)? Will it be DIR? Good choice in the area on overall weight and wing lift? Any other opinions on the config?
Thanks

FWIW I'm 6' and 220# and there are lots of gear & suit configs that your setup would leave me overweighted. Also, I just used the plain 2" d-rings everywhere on my harnesses & crotch straps. Of course I'm a KISS guy (Keep It Simple Stupid - just in case you think I'm coming on to you).

For cold water I use a Koplin 6# SS plate and a Koplin 6# STA. With Doubles I use one of Scott's Travel (2#) plates. I'm using it with my steel 72's up here and I used it with al80's in Akumal in a 3/2 wetsuit in the cenotes, and needed no extra lead.

Don't overload yerself. Keep your kit flexible.

You're heavy, Rick. Really heavy.

I'm 6'4" tall and 225 pounds. I'm diving up in the frozen hinterlands with 12 lbs on my back - 7 pound plate, 5 pound STA - and with a steel tank, I've only got 6 pounds on my weightbelt, for a total of 18 pounds. You've got 21 pounds already committed to your back - to put all your weight high up like that means you could easily get very 'nose heavy.' Especially if you're diving dry and end up with some air in your legs or something.

I had an exchange of emails with Scott Koplin about the 30 vs the 45# wings, and he said to buy the 45#. Scott dives the PNW so he knows cold water diving. When I get another single wing it will be the 45#. I have a 27# Halcyon and it's not enough for me to feel comfortable in my cold water gear. It's perfect for down south though. 8)

John, look 2 posts up. I've adjusted very much as you suggest:
Rick Inman:
FredT BP SS .188 long 9# (LONG is Fred's NORMAL size. He also has X-Long and short)
FredT STA 5#
Oxycheq Harness Kit (four bent D-rings, one D-ring, belt buckle, crotch strap and webbing).

I'm skipping the P weight for now, also. The IRS web site says my money will be direct deposited no later than Fri., so it looks like the above is what I'm ordering!
Thanks again for all the help,
Rick

Oh, also I'm buying an LP95 and a Nitrox class. God bless GB and the IRS... :salute:
