My Honda Civic in Maui has an electronic key. The dealer made a dumb copy of the key though. It won't start the car, but will open the doors.

I wear the dumb key on a lanyard around my neck on shore dives, and leave the smart key in the trunk.

Most cars do this, my Chrysler does, my sons Ford does and the local locksmith told me dang near every single car does . you dont even have to go to the dealer to do this. A plain metal or plastic copy of your key will get you in door or trunk and can be made at most hardware stores.

I am still the only one to do this in my group and everyone elses keys go in my trunk. This is kinda handy cause they all make sure I get out of the water, even help carry stuff or they have to wait for me to get in their cars

What a great way to make sure your buddies stay with you! :)

I have a small dry box attached to the dive flag for beach dives. I keep my fishing license, Drivers license, and a car key in it. You just need to make sure to not let go of the flag because losing it would really suck.

I do that too but somehow mine leaked and got my fishing license all wet last week. Good thing it's water-resistant paper.

Funny thing, not really, but I went to the blue heron bridge to dive back on 09/10/06 and ended up being told the vis was to bad so we headed to Gulf Stream park in Lake Worth. We went diving and while we were in the water, someone drilled a hole in the drivers side door of our car (which happened to be parked out in the open at the handicapped spot because my friend is handicapped) and stole all of the credit cards and cash out of my wallet. When we got back to the car, we had no idea it had been broken into and we cleaned up and left to get something to eat. At the restaraunt, I went to pay and noticed my cards and cash were nowhere to be seen. I called the credit card company and someone had just bought $1300+ at Lowe's just down from the beach. I ended up being covered because by my bank but it still sucked.

You can't take those new fangled keys in the water. My new Camry only has a remote.... I never take it out of my pocket to drive the car. It has one of those magic buttons. :)

Those small dry boxes don't always stay dry, either...
Make a key without the chip. Leave the electronic key in the car. The other key goes with you. It won't start your car, but it will unlock the door.

I have to check to see if I can even lock the remote in the car. It has a key in the remote to unlock the doors... but... I don't think I can leave the key in the car... I don't think the doors will lock. My new Camry doesn't have an ignition switch... I have this magic button... :eyebrow:

We have valet keys for our cars, it does start the engine, but you can only unlock the drivers door - i dont know how that works. I also have a regular old style key that goes with me.

If you do leave your key or other stuff in a dry box on your float, why not put it in a baggie inside the dry box - double protection for spray or if its under the flag, in very limited depth of water?

Sorry to hear about your car, but it is a valuable lesson to learn - people are way too trusting/nieve that others wont do this or that and others are just waiting to prey on them - maybe it wont happen to you today or tomorrow or hasnt in the past, but they play this game all the time and often it pays off, it could eventually be on you.

As for the drilling out of the lock - i dont think you can plan much for that except the diving in teams!
