Saliva works OK for me, but not great.If saliva works for you, go for it.
However, it does not work well for me - never has and never will.
I've tried a bunch of different methods over the years. Always started with a pre-scrub or two. Originally was using toothpaste, which worked fine, but definitely required a good rinsing after. Otherwise the mint flavoring will wake your eyes up.
What I'm using now is 500 psi scrub on new masks and Stream2Sea defog before diving. Doesn't take much defog to prep the mask before diving, and lasts a good while. I only need to defog for the first dive with this.
I also use diluted baby shampoo for aquarium dives. Works pretty well, but I think Stream2Sea works better. At the end of a long dive with baby shampoo, I sometimes do need to clear the mask by lightly flooding it. Never need to do that with Stream2Sea.
