Belated movie review: Open Water

So here's a curiosity question...

Have those of you who do a lot of boat diving noticed any difference before or after this movie in the way that the divemasters handle the roll? Did it make Joe Public any more "aware" or paranoid that prompted divemasters to "annunciate" the way that they keep track of people in order to assure people that they weren't going to leave them behind?

The movie didn't, but the event did. At least it changed how the boat operators in Australia operated. I am sure it prompted changes elsewhere as well. The event that the movie is loosly based upon took place in 1998.

If you read the link I posted earlier on the Barrier Reef case and the questions raised on government intervention, the changes in procedures when boat diving in Queensland have tightened dramatically and the monitoring by authorities has also increased.

After the event Queensland passed a law that dive ops must have divers sign off the boat and sign on the boat. The next part I really like and would love to see implemented all over. They have inspectors that (like mystery shoppers) that go diving to see if the practices are being followed.

Open Water was a Sundance favorite if I remember correctly. That's where the buzz got started. The story behind the movie is more interesting than the movie. The interesting thing for me was that is was filmed with Stuart Cove's in Nassau, a place I have dove with, and the boobilage scene.

Other than that, not a real good move for divers. However, I had a non-diver tell me it reminded them of "Blair Witch", a movie I found to be really well done, scary but not gory. Being a diver and instructor, "Open Water", just seemed to have too many glaring poor skills/decision making.

As far as better movies with diving in it, "JAWS", "The Deep", "Thunderball", "Sphere", "Into the Blue", "The Abyss", heck even "Flipper" - however, my favorite underwater movie, and I haven't seen it in years is "Blue Water; White Death"

The movie did however bring up a training question, The two "victim" divers surfaced between two dive boats, after an attempt to signal either dive boat, would your buddy and you then seperate from one another and try to swim to either dive boat. The movie portrayed a long interval of attempting to signal the dive boat, at what time do able bodied divers try to make it to a boat, in this scenerio if my wife made it to a boat she could simply inform the boat driver that I was attempting to make it to the other boat. if one of the boats pulled away would you then try to rejoin your buddy? Alot of time in the movie was wasted trying to signal a boat, shouldn't an attempt be made to get closer to one of the two boats portrayed in the movie, or would seperating from your buddy be too risky, it appeared that the surface conditions would have been favorable for this type of attempt at self rescue, Lastly I know what really happened to the Divers, during the movie the Boyfriend dive buddy actually pulled out the blame card, the woman simply pulled out her dive knife and stabbed him, well thats what my wife would have done, The woman is sitting on some secluded beach drinking mai tais right now!

I enjoyed the movie. Didn't think it was a good movie, but highly entertaining. Escapism factor is great. Something you would watch if you have nothing else to do and are bored/ too lazy to do the things you should do...... ( the frames you still have to hang up, the lawn needs to be mowed, the aircon filter needs to be replaced). For that I give it an 8.

As for the 'facts and activities that lead to the assumed deaths'.... complete and utter stupidity and way over the top. But it is true, there are things out there that want to eat us.......:11:
