I'm sure this subject has come up many times but here goes — I'm getting a drysuit (need to extend my Great Lakes dive season), decided on Bare XCS2 Tech Dry. I've looked at the various underwear options and it seems the purpose built mid-layers are worthwhile but as for the base layers is the there a major advantage to the Bare (or any of the other purpose built options) or should I just get high quality underwear? Seems even the premium ski underwear is about half the price…

UnderArmor or anything like that works well. Expedition weight is nice.

I use some stuff made by a local company for sailing folks -- Kamgear. It comes in different weights, is well-made, warm, and costs about half what diving-dedicated stuff does.

Look for a company called Dri Duke. It is what the Army issues us. I use it or base layer. It is basically Under Armor cold gear, except for about $20 an item.
