As I sit here at home with a 2º F (wind chill -15º) temp outside, I have noticed that for our upcoming trips to Coz (next week), Cancun, and then Coz again, American Airlines does show under "Travel Requirements" a 'Mandatory tourist tax (Visitax) for Quintana Roo' with a link to pay online - $16.

Anyone with new experiences on this since last post in December?

Have you purchased tix yet? If so, how will it be enforced, I wonder. My advice is to have US$16 in cash with you when you go through Customs if you don't pay it on line.

I will be booking tix to CZM soon, so it may be required as part of the ticket price.

Tix already purchased - don't think they will include it in airfare price in future. Have only read that you can pay at a terminal in Cancun if not prepaid (and have the QR code) - nothing about Cozumel.

I was hoping that someone who had been to and returned from Cozumel, either direct or via Cancun, in late Dec./early Jan. might have had some update.

* The American Airlines link takes you to the state government site to pay the Visitax in advance.

We are in the same boat, we are in Coz now but will fly out of Cancun in March with our kids & grandkids.

Is it charged for each person or family?

everything i have read about the Visitax is that most people do not pay it ahead of time. and when anyone tries to stop them and ask them to pay it, they ignore them and walk right past without paying.
i have seen this discussed on other forums.
i am not saying you shouldn't pay it. just sharing what some others have said about it.

Don't worry about it. It is not enforced, no one will ask to see proof of payment, and it is not, as some have suggested, tracked on your passport. Occasionally there will be some people at CUN, stationed at a kiosk at the bottom of the stairs leading to security, walking up to random people trying to encourage them to pay. Ignore them. They have no authority to do anything.

The only way to pay is online and there are several scam websites purporting to be official ways to pay this tax. Be careful - they will tack on outrageous service fees and do who knows what with whatever information you give them. One of the official sites is owned and operated by a Canadian company who take a commision for every payment processed. In what world does that make any sense? You can draw your own conclusions.

This is the official site to pay: VISITAX

It is a per person charge. Depending on which information (that comes from the links below) is correct, there is no charge for age 15 and below OR the charge is the same for adults, children, and infants.

The only way to pay is online
From the blog: Cancun's Tourism Tax – Everything You Need to Know (2025)
"There are kiosks where you can pay the tax in pesos or dollars."
"Lines may be long, so give yourself plenty of time."
".....but you can only pay at the airport in cash."

Below is an example of the type of information/crapola that makes things like this difficult to know, thus the reason to ask if any recent traveler can share first hand knowledge.

"New electronic terminals are also being set up at the Airport where travelers will be able to make a cash payment for the new visitor fee."

"ONLINE. The VisiTAX can only be paid ONLINE. There ARE NO booths or desk available at the airports to pay the VisiTAX."

:confusing:

It seems odd to me that the details of a tax are only on the Cancun Airport website and the app that takes your money, and neither of them are from a .gov or .mx domain. I guess I'll find out in April when I go to Cozumel if they let me in without paying it.

Take a look at the link I provided a couple of posts up. There's zero enforcement anywhere and no people at a kiosk outside of CUN. Up to you if you want to pay it but no one will ask to see proof of payment.

You'll get in - the Visitax is to get out! So, refuse to pay and you might have to stay there for awhile...oh no!!!! 🤣

That's a great clue about it not being on the Cozumel Airport website - nothing! I guess I won't worry about it for Cozumel.
