I just did the bag drag on 11/9. The Cancun airport was a nightmare. It took me 90 minutes to get out of there between clearing customs and getting my luggage (and my luggage came fairly quickly and our flight arrived 30 minutes early!) Customs was a total disaster. The bus and ferry were OK. My flight landed at 2:30, and I was at my hotel by 6.
Our friends also flew in from Vancouver that day at 6:40 pm. Had to wait 2+ hours for bags. barely made the last 10 pm ferry by about 10 minutes

Did the drag last Friday (11/22). Landed at 1330, through immigration, customs and into our shuttle at 1405. Zero issues that day! Got on the 1530 ferry. Did get screwed and bought ferry tickets from a scalper in front of the terminal (lesson learned).

What’s everyone pay the guys to ride their bags back to the shuttle pickup spot?

They’re smart at what they do. They almost got us. They know people are tired and don’t want to stand in the long line. Luckily I walked over to the ticket booth to check prices. We opted not to stand in the really long ticket booth line and went with one with just a few people, even though the ferry was leaving 30 minutes later. Gave us time for an adult beverage.

Did our first ever bag drag on 11/25/2024.

Customs took like 5 minutes, was totally empty and at least 6 agents 😀 Bags took 45min with only 2 other planes ahead of us 😞.

Out of the terminal and was paid and on a ADO within 15minutes. Nice, comfortable ride with assigned seats and a movie running. It did make a quick stop at another terminal and then about 45min cruising nice followed by about 10min of traffic the last mile or so.

Dragging bags to the ferry was more annoying than difficult due to some uneven papers, etc as mentioned.

Was paid and on the Winjet with 20 minutes and crossing from depart to tie up seemed around 50min.

One thing I learned. They asked if bags were fragile. We said yes to smaller bags with electronics and they just had us carry them on which was nice - i had assumed no carry on.

Wow, our security experience entering Cancun to fly out was very quick, no lines but one bag was pulled. The xray found a small spray suntan lotion can my wife didn't realize was in there.

FYI - If you fly Sun Country it is terminal # 4 which is the first stop at the airport.

Also Sun Country seems to share 4 ticket stalls with Flair.

VisiTax: This was new to us and we only realized it when leaving. There were 7 or 8 agents at the base of the escalator with tablets and Visitax(sp?) signs. The agent couldn't explain it well enough in English so I blew it off...as did everyone else. When back home I looked into it

It appears that Quintanna Roo has started a visitor tax $17. Proof of payment is required when arriving. But the entry customs agent never said a thing. Upon further reading, QR has no assigned way to collect it arrival. So if someone asks you pay upon arrival it would be a scam.

I am guessing these people at departure are trying to recoup some of the revenue lost.

I believe there is one credible web company to purchase from and obtain the barcode for proof. But with no enforcement seem rather pointless.

It's been 2yrs since we were last in Mexico so probably not news to most here.

I honestly think the state would collect more money if they just put up kiosks asking for voluntary donations to help improve the infrastructure of QR and ensured it actually went for infrastructure.

Many people aren't snubbing visitax because the $17 is a financial pain or because they don't want to support Mexico but because of the shady nature of it and the likelihood the money is all going into the pockets of a few cronies. It can't be a coincidence that the former governor that set it up lives in Toronto and the one company sanctioned to collect it is based in Toronto.

Have been looking into this as I'll be flying into Cozumel twice and Cancun once early next year. As I understand it, Visitax is purchased only online (Travelkore) and the resulting QR code is only shown when departing Quintana Roo - so won't be asked for it when arriving and definitely a scam if a person was asked to pay for it upon arrival. You just have to have it before you leave, so one could purchase it anytime while they were in Quintana Roo. Supposedly is tied to your passport since you have to provide them that info. The money collected is/was at least partially supposed to benefit tourism.

From what I've read, Cancun airport (as indicated in earlier post) seems to be the one airport that has agents checking for the Visitax QR code. Cozumel, not at all.

Hope someone starts a thread about experiences with the Visitax at the different airports. Seems like the safe thing to do is get it, but what happens if you don't, especially if they start enforcing it?

I've seen no evidence that anyone is enforcing visitax upon departure. By enforce, I mean requiring you to pay and get the code before proceeding and scanning the code to ensure it matches passport. Who exactly would be doing this? You would have massive chaos with long lines of thousands of people trying to purchase last minute as they are trying to catch a flight out.
