Part of our group last week dealt with the bag drag, only issues were the CUN airport customs folks deciding their underwater scooters were electronic devices and subject to the import tax as has been discussed about laptops, cameras and phones. On the upside the return flights from CUN were plentiful and reliable whereas the American CZM flight was canceled with the rescheduled flight two days later...

Do I remember correctly that the Ado bus drops you at a place where you can roll bags along a smooth(er) sidewalk to the Ferry, as opposed to taxis which drop you at the entrance to all the shopping junk with much rougher walkways?

From the bus station to the ferry is a somewhat smooth all sidewalk stroll with luggage. Just small bumps in the sidewalk. I can’t speak for taxi drop off but when we were dropped off from a tour shuttle with our luggage it was down a very bumpy pathway which was not fun with luggage. I imagine most taxis unless otherwise asked will drop off at the same location because it’s closer to the ferry.

On the way back from the ferry to the bus station I highly recommend getting one of guys with the tricycle/bicycles to haul your luggage uphill to the bus station. Worth the $5 (I think it was) to haul it back up. They’re usually on the ferry pier waiting for us tired looking Gringos.

How much were they charged?

If you are in a taxi can't you tell the driver where to let you out?
As I recall the taxis get hassled for taking you to the spot near the bus terminal. That is, they seem to NEED to drop you by the entrance to the shopping area. Maybe the law, maybe kickbacks from the stores? who knows.

Yeah, it's paver brick type stuff but you can roll bags. You could always get a bike shuttle to haul your stuff if you like. I assume so on the way down, I know you can on the way up.

The tiny wheels on most roller bags are problematic on paving stones or cobblestones. Roller bags are designed for the smooth floors of airports and train stations; they won't last long on rough and uneven surfaces. The little rubber donuts on the wheels are the first to go; I frequently see them in pieces on sidewalks.

I'm not worried about being able to drag the bags to / from the ferry, just messing up the wheels on my roll bags. The path through the shopping areas were really bumpy (by design). It's been a while, but I thought the path from where the bus drops you is normal sidewalk.

The paver-sidewalk is better than I recall. Coming from the ADO bus station to the ferry, if you make the first left down the hill, before the pedestrian walk that leads directly to the ferry, I believe the sidewalk is somewhat smoother (maybe less steep too) and there are fewer people to navigate around.

Here's one of the least artistic and possibly most helpful photos I have taken:

So right now the WinJet and Ultramar still alternate on the hour, but the Xcaret runs on the half hour in between, so there's not as long wait no matter when you show up. The next departure will be clearly marked. Just a reminder to not buy tickets until you get to the dock. You'll have several offers beforehand at higher prices.
