Backup lights are a one time purchase. Buy it right the first time and save yourself future grief.
Oh, I don't know about that ... seems to me that about every year or so someone comes out with a backup light I like better than the one I'm using.

I've currently got a pair of Photon Torpedo LED's ... nice light ... but there's smaller, brighter lights out there now that I'd prefer to have ... and probably will at some point.

In scuba diving, there's no such thing as a "one time purchase" ...

Let me know when you decide to sell off those PTs! :eyebrow:

One nice thing about rugged, high end gear like Photon Torpedos is they hold their resale value a lot better than PrincetonTec-class lights...

I use a couple of UK SL4. Not DIR because they have have switches. However, they are robust lights. I am still using one that is over 10 years old. I have had them turn on once accidently and have flooded them twice - both times due to user error. I just recently dissassemble the switch and cleaned it after a flood. Even after the flood the halogen bulb worked fine. I just had to clean up the contact area.

Slightly off topic but I think the rage of having an LED backup is over blown. I just bought another UK SL4 for $20 with batteries. The LED version is 3x the cost. The halogen is very reliable and as noted handles flooding. I am not sure the LED would. I would much rather replace a $10 light head than a $50 head.

I would LOVE a short Torpedo. I'm considering the same thing for my setup (I'll move my PT to the right strap and get a shorter light that hits my canister less for the right).

Has anyone heard of a PT flooding without serious user error being involved?

Mine did, but I'm not sure of the cause. Of course it was replaced and the service was incredible!

May I ask what is smaller and brighter?

I had my PT flood. Peter put it together, and I don't think the o-ring was lying flat.

We've had three or four backup lights flood through switches.

I love my Rat Jr. It's a bright little light, and fits on my harness just perfectly.

So far I'll stick with my UK Mini Q40's with the MBH mod. They have excellent o-ring seals and SAE fine thread on/off adjustment. Just make sure that you turn the light head two full turns CCW beyond "off" or depth compression will turn them back on for you.

How did you mod the light? LED? second O-ring? Camo paint job? All of the above???

I add an "ah-ougga" horn and 2 strobe lights.

Seriously, the UK Q40 lacks an attachment point on the butt end of the light to tie off a bolt snap. I use a plastic compound to form an attachment point onto these lights. It's rock solid and works like a charm. I've posted the "how two" in the last month or so But I'll be happy to post it again tomorrow if you are truely interested.
