Ok cool thanks for the suggestions :) (this forum is very handy for that~~~)

Is there some kind of website that has a big list of fish that live around Melbourne with pictures? I just keep seeming to find fishing reports, guess I am googling the wrong thing. Might get a slate at the local shop as they have ones with all the common fish.

The australian museum and sea slug forum I use fairly frequently and find them very useful ... fishbase i havent used that much so am not sure how useful it is

Ok the first link was really cool, I think I identified the fish in picture 10 of my album as a Red Gurnard Perch!

Well according to google there are lots of types of gurnards, gurnard perches or just perches so I am guessing they are all different. Confusing!

Your picture does not look like the one I have of the fish but perhaps they are related somehow.

(I've now figured out how to put the pictures in properly to my posts :) unfortunately they have been compressed and now don't look so great :().

It looks like red gurnard perch. AKA a sea perch or ocean perch. They are members of the family Scorpaenidae (scorpion fish).

Proper Gurnards are from the family Triglidae.

Proper Seaperches along with Rock Cods are from the family Serranidae
