I have no interest or need or want to become a certified GUE / DIR diver. However, I am always interested in any new techniques, philosophies and equipment configurations since I might learn something that I decide is valuable to me personally........ so I can appreciate anything the GUE/DIR agency has to offer in that regard. It's my choice to take it or leave it.

The only reason I am even reacting and responding to this thread is because that's what we do here. I didn't start this thread. I'm just reacting to it and giving my personal opinion. If you don't want to hear other folks opinions, then don't ask for them.
I stand corrected, your lack of a sense of humour would make you an ideal candidate.

So my understanding from your response is that you are saying that anyone with a lack of sense of humor would be an ideal candidate for GUE / DIR. That totally explains all I need to know about GUE/DIR.

Q. When was the fun and an individuals personal fun and adventure taken out of diving?
A. GUE was founded in 1998!

You hunt for lingcod, I know you do.
I’ve never known any DIR’s to ever hunt.
You probably also solo dive, and try different gear configurations and probably none of them are DIR compliant, are they?
Don’t worry about it, you’ll never become a DIR compliant, just like me.
For years I thought it was all mythology. It still is mythology to me and an abstract concept because we don’t have any here. We used to have one but he left. So it’s all just air, it means nothing, just words on a screen is all.
Keep shooting ling’s man and if and when you ever get a chance to come visit, you can go home with a barrel of urchins and even give some to your friends.
And this ‘ain’t mythology.

This isn't the first time I've seen you make conclusions about GUE from the responses of non-GUE divers. If you take one person's prejudice as proof your own prejudice is correct, then aren't you forgetting about the pudding?

I actually find it quite funny when people equate team diving, GUE or DIR with not having fun. What those people don't get is that standardized equipment and procedures REMOVES the focus on equipment and procedures, so you can focus on having fun and enjoying the diving. In the same way, a well functioning team makes diving easier, less stressful and safer so you can achieve more and push the limits of adventure and exploration. Diving in a good team is kick-ass fun, and you have someone to share the excitement and feeling of accomplishment with. The reason there aren't that many GUE divers on these forums is that they're out there diving, having fun, exploring, pushing boundaries, challenging themselves and growing as divers and team mates. If that doesn't sound more fun than fiddling with your own gear and procedures, just to take pride in being different and individualistic, then keep doing what you're doing, I guess. To each their own.

Yeah right..... Simple question. Do your organization rules explicitly exclude folks like me who enjoy a cigar on the golf course while not diving?...... And does your organization exclude anyone who who chooses to dive solo? It's really a simple yes or no answer.

Why care? You either like their rules and how they dive or you don't. There's just no need to badger them or try to embarrass them. Dive and let dive. I have several friends who are DIR, and even more who are GUE. We get along just fine. One even want's to dive with my strokey self. It's all good. Keep it mellow.

I don't care.....and I am not badgering anyone. The only reason I am even responding to this thread is that the OP started a thread asking about attitudes towards DIR divers so I provided my personal opinion. If you or the OP don't want to hear other folks opinions......then don't ask for them.

They deserved a break after this week’s shakeup
I've been out diving and hadn't noticed the resurrection of this thread, but I did see GUE's announcement of the new Performance Diver course. I get the impression the course is aimed at people like some who have been complaining here that GUE doesn't offer a skills-focused, rec-only, low-doctrine workshop. Maybe one of our GUE skeptics here will give it a try and let us know how it was.
