Hello fellow Poseidon Odin owners,

Just an exciting update for those of you who LOVE those Odins.....but are not so fond of the original OEM mouthpieces.

I've just installed some COOL new OEM mouthpieces on all 3 of my Odin reg sets.....they're so new that only one of the several Poseidon dealers in my area was even aware of their existance, so don't be surprised if you get a puzzled look when you ask for them at your LDS.

I don't have a photo to show you, and if you're not careful, your LDS will try to sell you the 'wrong' OEM mouthpiece...so be careful.

Esentially there are 3 OEM mouthpieces:

1) 'original' hard black rubber mouthpiece.

2) a 'newer' slightly softer black OEM silicone mouthpiece, which looks essentially identical to the 'original' black rubber one. ---this is the mouthpiece most Poseidon dealers will try to sell you when you ask them for the 'improved' soft silicone mouthpiece.........but this mouthpiece is only a little more comfortable than the 'original' version.

3) the 'really-new' softer silicone OEM mouthpiece (mine came in black but I've also seen them in a medium steel gray color). They're a little bit longer than the other 2 versions...maybe 1/4 to 1/3 inch longer...so they're easier to grip. One way to ID them is by inspecting the biting surfaces.....each bite wing has 4 little oval-shaped 'dimples' on each bite contact surface......so if you count all 4 surfaces it will total 16 'dimples' in the silicone. If the mouthpiece your LDS tries to sell you lacks these 'dimples' and isn't a bit longer than the 'old' one you already have......then they are mistakenly selling you "version #2".

I haven't had a chance to dive them yet....maybe next weekend......but I thought fellow Poseidon Odin owners might appreciate the info.

( I think there's also such a mouthpiece for you Cyklon owners too).

Also consider the SeaCURE mouthpiece. I have had the SeaCURE on my Odin for several years, and its great. SeaCURE doesn't actually manufacture a mouthpiece for Odins (at least they didn't a few years back). However, you can take the largest one they make and make it fit without too much trouble. For the record, this mouthpiece conforms to your own jaw when you stick it in boiling water and then bite into it.=-)

Don't bother with the OEM Poseidon mouthpiece. Go Secure, you will not regret it. It's a great product. I have them on all my primary second stages. The only problem is a regular mouthpiece will never be good enough for you ever again!

Hello the thumper,

I'm in the Dallas/Ft Worth TX area.....you can order mouthpieces from Southern Scuba in Ft. Worth.

The link is:

southernscuba.net

Their tel# is 817 568 1055

Ask for the owner Alec.

I'm not sure the WWW site is finished, so you may have to just call in your order.
(they're closed Tues + Sundays)

I've had mixed results with SeaCure mouthpieces......I use them with success on my Mares regs, but here's the scoop as far as SeaCure mouthpieces fitting on Poseidon Odins.

According to the official SeaCure WWW site, the following mouthpiece will fit the Odin:

Pro Model SeaCure II .......however, they warn that it takes a "considerable extra effort" to mount it......which is VERY true! I had a non-Poseidon LDS mount one for me a few months ago......and I never could get it to stop leaking......the SeaCure 'plastic' is very hard, so it doesn't seal well when pressed against the hard plastic of the 2nd stage.

Eventually I gave up on the SeaCure (for the Odin at least) and reinstalled the hard-rubber OEM mouthpieces.....which aren't perfect, but at least they don't leak.

(Alec at Southern Scuba ......being the regional Poseidon master tech for my 6-state area.......says he can successfully install even the SeaCure, but I held off re-trying the SeaCure, and thought I'd give the new-improved soft silicone OEM mouthpieces a chance. (plus they're 1/2 as expensive as the SeaCure .) Also, even if the SeaCure can be made to fit, they're still very hard.....the soft silicone ones are a lot gentler on the mouth/gums.

Another drawback to installing the SeaCure on the Odin is the Odin has a nice wide 2nd stage orfice, which is part of the reason the Odin is such a high-performance reg.......however, the orfice on the SeaCure is MUCH smaller than the orfice on the OEM mouthpieces.....which chokes down the airflow, which in turn defeats the very purpose of buying a high performance regulator in the 1st place!

So trust me, I've studied this issue at length.......and I think the new OEM silicone mouthpieces are the best option......that's why I've installed a total of 6 on all the 2nd stages of my 3 Odin reg sets. They're so much softer than the SeaCures, and they don't obstruct the airflow the way the SeaCure does.

I've studied the SeaCURE situation a bit, too, and should have offered some more comments about my experience. At the time I installed my seacure mouthpiece on my Odin 2 years ago, I discovered a discrepancy between the web page description and the package label as to which mouthpiece fits the Odin. What led me to this discovery was sort of funny. I bought the mouthpiece from my lds picking the proper one per the package label, took it home and immediately set about installing it, or so I thought. Over the next 30 min I grunted, twisted and tried every way I could imagine short of sawing of pieces of my second stage to get the mouthpiece on. All the while wondering how they defined "considerable extra effort and strength" and questioning my masculinity:D. Finally, frustated I took a new tack, boiled up some water, and did what you shouldn't do -- stuck the regulator end of the mouthpiece in boiling water to soften it so it would finally fit. Well it went over the odin, but was basically well done and mushy, hardly resembling what it started out as. I then went back to the web page and noticed a non-correspondence in the model type on the web page description relative to the package. I went back to the LDS and picked up the right one, and it went on without really that much effort. I will post pics. Alas I can't remember which model I finally used, but its a bigg'un. This mouthpiece is not for everyone.

I agree fully with Karl that the hole is restricted on the seacure compared to the original part. While I would like to try the new mouthpiece from Poseidon, I have to say the seacure is trick in its own way because of the fit, extension back to the molars and rigidity (designed by an orthodontist). I run an original mouthpiece on my back-up. If I need some more air I'll just switch over.;)

Hi thethumper,

They're open from 1130am to 7 pm on weekdays, central time.

I haven't had a chance to look at the manual.......I'm not brave enough to work on my own regs, so I leave that to the experts......but thanks for listing it for us.

I had to special order those mouthpieces, he didn't have any in stock at the time......so I had to wait about 6 weeks for delivery.

I think he ordered some extra ones, in addition to the 6 I ordered, since I showed him there's a demand for them from Odin owners.......but I recommend you order yours from him ASAP, since once he runs out again it may take a while to get more in.

I was forced to wait for them, as there's no such thing a generic mouthpieces for Odins......but I think they're worth the wait.

Hi thethumper,

I last spoke to Alec @ Southern Scuba on Friday 10/04/02........directory assistance says the # I gave you is correct, but I called it and it has been disconnected......and you reached their answering machine Tuesday 10/08/02.

I have Alec's e-mail address + cell #, so I will try to find out what's going on and let you know.
