Marksmen skills are important but that alone as you know is not going to get you into the SEALS.

I think if you join the Navy to become a seal there is no sure thing that one will graduate boot camp let alone SEAL training. Make sure you realize if you join the navy and dont pass seal training your not going to be discharged. In fact your still going to do 4 yrs active duty as a sailor.

im sure you knew it, but it would be a bad thing to find out after the fact.

Dont let one encounter with a SEAL sway your judgement, there are sooo many wannabe seals out there its not even funny. Many claiming to be SEALS actually are not. Just getting thru a few weeks of BUDs doesnt make you a seal if you dont complete the entire training program. I wish i could recall the WEB site that posts the names of these people. It would shock you how many people are on the list. Those who brag the most about being a SEAL never were a SEAL.

Took a peek at the site, wanting to see just how many "wannabes" had been outed - my gosh! Pages and pages of them - what sad and pathetic lives they must lead to want to pretend to be something they're not.

i never said i wanted to be a seal, just said i passed all the exams to enter in a technical role (RAF, Navy), but due to cut backs, they were not recruiting for another 6 months as all roles were filled, i could have gone in as a grunt, but said no thank you and left straight away.

not too sure about the US, but I am sure you have to do some form of qualifying period in the forces before you can apply for special forces, or you would have every tom, dick and harry joining up to go in SF's and they wouldn't have a clue about your background.

watched a program on the green berrets last night (UK marine commando's) 52 started, after 30 weeks training 9 passed out, the rest was split between being back trooped (dropping back into the next training group) due to injury or lack of fitness and saying good bye, that is a high mortality rate

You have my sympathies on your cousin's death. It must have been particularly hard for everyone, since he had survived his tour.

it just makes what the army said a pile of s**t with all the others that have recently come to light.

when i was in Kosovo, they were up to similar tricks there as well:

there was a lead smelt that got closed down due to pollution, but it was that bad, no NATO women were allowed near it, apparently lead is even more dangerous to women (fertility) than men.

i was told that when the Canadians left they took only their personal items and heavy freight stuff, they left everything including the cutlery, because of contamination....even their boots!

because of the heavy metal uranium shells blasted every where, when we went there was not a single person out of 20 + that was not ill, and the squadies were bad as well.

I had bronchitas (SP?) for the whole 8 weeks there and almost ended up in hospital when i got back, i was diagnosed as having post viral fatigue.... i was fit as a fiddle before i went, there were 3 others that were really ill as well one slightly less and the other was so bad she had 6 months off work.

the company (BAESYSTEMS) tried to brush it under the carpet and say there was no chance of contamination and no tests available to check for poisoning, and the UK gov denied anything and everything.

I was ill for over a year, with real bad flue symptoms, ear infections, throat infections, chest infections.

even now 2 years later if i get run down or stressed i get ill, and feel like i can't move or i will colapse

Clive,
Why is it you mention UK Marines or other branches of the Marines such as Mountain Leaders (ML’s) or SBS in a lot of your posts? You seem to like these guys.
Yes know that the UK Marines were called into Afghanistan by the USA “for their abilities in the mountains”. Do you not think that’s not just another way of saying hey guy’s we would like you to take a big part in this, not “we don’t have any mountain troops”. Last time I was in Norway there were quite a few USMC guys there as well.

?

did you not read any of the posts previous to mine?

i said (lost count now how many times i have typed this!!) i picked up on previous threads, what other people said, someone mentioned the marines, SBS and French and Norwegion (I think) and got a roasting, then while this thread was going on, there was a program on the TV about the marine commando's, that is it.........nothing more nothing less, i thought we had sorted this out, but obviously you want to carry it on?

Yes I have read the other posts and no I don’t want to carry this on. It’s just that you mentioned one outfit a few times and I was wondering if you had a family member serving with them or you were a SAS guy, you know Saturdays and Sundays Territorial Army type.

no saturdays and sundays are for diving (when i haven't got this damn cold!) and my wife.

like i said, they were on the TV, everyone else was blowing the seals trumpet.

one of the army guys I was working with in Kosovo suggested i join the signals TA as they were short, but i think they are on a commission for introducing people.

In Kosovo the foreman of signals was a good laugh, but he had a bit of a chip on his shoulder towards civies, especially as we were getting paid shed loads more than them over there.

any way he kept throwing abuse at us so i offered him out on the range, and threw the glove down. he declined due to army rules/insurance, but i couldn't see what the problem was, if we were on a proper range and had proper instruction, i reckon he didn't want to get his ar*e kicked by a "civy wan*er" as he called us.

they were not allowed off base unless on patrol, we used to say to him (when he was giving us grief) "we are going into town tonight for a piza and a beer, do you want to come?", he soon eased up after that. :D

After the discussion we had during this thread about how you never see the British special services on television . . .

I saw a show on the Discovery Channel on Sunday about snipers. They had quite an interesting section showing sniper training for the Royal Marines. And yes, guys, they showed their faces and their names!

The training looked pretty amazing. Twelve out of fourteen of the fellows made it to the next level of training, which was pretty impressive. My hat is off to all of them!
