I actually found a use for a snorkel, naturally I didn't have it with me. I was low on air coming back, and someone had spotted an octupus. The water was less than 10' deep, so sitting at the surface would have worked nicely. Having the snorkel I could have hung out for a while and watched it. Instead I had to head in.
