Go to the phillipines or new zealand for cultural experiences, i think you will find australia surprisingly americanized not that pp isnt + pp has some of the most beautiful woman on earth :) and i would avoid NW aus as its hot dry and BORING but there is some nice diving.......

The military coup in Fiji is the damnest thing I have every read about.

The military is running ads in the newspaper for people to hold cabinet and other important government positions. The qualifications are - be honest - have concern about doing a good job - and no criminal record.

Interesting.

Can't speak for the diving, but Australia is a fascinating and varied country, and you can catch flights from city to city for about the same as a greyhound here ( or at least you could back in 2003 when I was training there.) The Phillipines is also an awesome spot and you can always jump ferries or whatnot between islands. Just make sure you know what the situation is on the islands you plan on visiting there. we were on Mindanao in 2003 also and usually somewhere that has US Marines deployed there for anything besides training isn't the best place for a vacation. Other then that area everything I have heard has been positive. My brother on the other hand swears by Thailand, mostly for the variety of experiences and the proximity to other extremely interesting countries.
