Well, if it's good enough for the vast majority of divers here, it's good enough for me. Personally I feel it's more of a hazard to me underwater than it is a help. I know a couple of people mentioned mixing it up with their inflator hose.... that could be dangerous. I figured it was mainly a OW training thing, but I just wanted to make sure there aren't gonna be people giving me the evil eye on the dive boat because I'm not wearing one. what a relief.

I know this sounds bad, but we busted the chops of one of our newer divers about still having a snorkle on his mask and refused to let him put his dive gear near ours. We were joking of course....or were we?

Well, Walter, by definition when at the surface one is no longer a diver. I posted a while back an account of once when I had to drop my gear and swim to the boat with a disstressed diver, at least 500 yards in chop. We can debate whether I needed my snorkel, but I sure used it.

Were you swimming side by side? Were you towing the other person? If so, what method did you use?

I didn't use it once and I DIED!!!! No, wait, I didn't die. I survived.

Don't carry it now on my typical quarry dives. I would in BIG water, I think. Along with a safety sausage, a mirror, a whistle...

If those same folks that are giving you the evil eye are wearing their mask on their forehead...well, you draw your own conclusions there.

I dive without snorkel keep in my BCD for necessary

I only dive with a snorkel when I teach ... because my agency requires me to do so.

It is clipped off on my left D-ring, and strapped to my left shoulder harness with two pieces of inner tube.

If I were to ever need it, I could deploy it ... and since I have never needed it, I prefer keeping it someplace where I can ignore it.

I would not wear a snorkel if someone gave me one made of solid gold. Snorkels are good for two things.

1. snorkeling
2. cant think of a second

2. 7-11 Big Gulps. On a really hot day.

I could not imagine paying the huge price for these weird snorkel things with little balls and valves and funny tubes and gizmos just to keep a little water out--what gives with that anyway and then having to dive with one strangling my face--no thanks--I will pass on that madness. N

If you are for real, then IMHO I think you should prefix your opinons with "IMHO" or something similar. Especially when making statements about something that the vast majority of divers would disagree with you on. I'm not saying that the vast majority of divers dive without snorkles (I even keep one in my pocket), I'm just saying that there would be very few divers that believe it to be a serious safety issue (even if you do have to teach it that way).

If you don't state that "this is your opinion" at the the beginning of your posts you just come accross as a little agressive and one eyed. We need to keep these posts civil.

Now I guess I'm stirring the pot a little.

:soapbox:
Well, I guess That's YOUR opinion, but, funny, I don't see any IMHO in front of it. Yet you call me "a little agressive and one eyed?" ;)

In fact, isn't this entire thread comprised of opinions? So, what? Every one is, in your eyes, "a little agressive and one eyed?"

Didn't the originator of the thread ask for people's opinions on whether the snorkel was useful or not? Perhaps the thread itself should be relabeled something like "IOHO" since it is all opinion?

But then, That's just my humble opinion ... :mooner:
